What makes you take a break from farming collectibles in your games?

It’s been almost two months since I asked whether you go back to farm old content in World of Warcraft or other games, and I’ve spent a lot of time during those intervening weeks looking for mounts. I’ve been pretty successful, acquiring the Time-Lost Proto-Drake, convincing Kael’thas to drop the Ashes of A’lar, and taking one of Onyxia’s drakes for my own. But RNG can be as cruel as it is kind, and my current suffering is tied to one specific location: Dragon Soul.

There are two mounts I need still from the final boss of the raid I’d like to give a makeover: the Lifebinder’s Handmaiden and the Blazing Drake (which completes the Awake the Drakes achievement and unlocks the Emerald Drake). Since the Handmaiden only drops on heroic I’ve been running the raid on that difficulty to kill two birds with one stone, but there’s a downside — every attempt requires a full clear of the instance. As a result it takes around 30 minutes per attempt; while faster than the Siege of Orgrimmar, it’s not an easy run with the Spine of Deathwing requiring full concentration when solo and way too much time spent waiting for RP conversations to finish.

As I approach attempt 100 for the Blazing Drake I’m beginning to think I need a break — I’ve spent literally several days of my life in this instance and I still don’t understand why Deathwing doesn’t have Ultraxion simply cast the Hour of Twilight outside of attack range so we can’t prevent it —  as it’s really wearing me down. I do want to hit attempt 100, though, so I’ll probably finish up this week’s runs and try again next week but I hate to give up, at a minimum because the raid entrance is annoying to get to.

What about your collecting endeavors? Does a bad run of luck discourage you and cause you to move on to something else, or do you stick with it until you get it (or your current sub expires)? And how cruel is RNG that I’ve had Ultraxion drop Experiment 12-B three weeks in a row (including twice in a row on the same character!) even though I owned the mount before I started my current farming run?
