What are some of the best Easter eggs you’ve found while gaming?

Plenty of artists, filmmakers, and creators of all sorts have placed little references and call-backs to different characters, locations, and inside jokes within their works for the keen-eyed and observant to find since time immemorial. Game developers are no different and have long placed Easter eggs in their games, usually referencing or poking at other media in good fun. World of Warcraft is such a big game that’s spanned almost two decades — so I know I’ve undoubtedly missed other Easter eggs — but Dragonflight added some really fun ones that I caught on to almost immediately

Uncle Mako

In the northern area of Valdrakken you’ll find an outdoor teashop with a male Pandaren wearing green overalls named Uncle Mako, a direct reference to the character Uncle Iroh from Avatar: The Last AirbenderMakoto Iwamatsu, or Mako, provided the voice for Iroh during the show’s first two seasons before his passing. During the second season, Iroh and Zuko open a tea shop in an Earth Kingdom city, whose main colors are green and gold, becoming famous among the locals for their incredible tea. If you’d like to visit Uncle Mako, he can be found north of Valdrakken near the cliffside. Iroh was one of my favorite characters when I watched the show in 2005 and again in 2020, so it’s a pleasant surprise to see him memorialized here.

Skyrim Book Club

I’m not surprised there are Skyrim Easter eggs still being hidden in games almost 12 years after the games release, I guess I was surprised it was this specific Easter egg — in Valdrakken you can find Noah Scribeson reading excerpts from his latest novel, A Lusty Draconian Mage, to a group of literary enthusiasts. Skyrim was filled to the brim with different books — some would grant skill points, some would provide quests, and others would provide worldbuilding and add to Elder Scrolls lore. The Lusty Argonian Maid did none of those and was just tongue-in-cheek smut that turned in to meme fuel. I don’t think I need to explain the obvious connection for this one. If you are curious about attending a reading for yourself, Noah can be found in Valdrakken (look right under the “N” on the map).

Eye see you

This one made the rounds on the internet a while ago and back then I decided to check it out for myself to make sure it was real — and sure enough, it was! Off the coast of the Ohn’ahran Plains, you can find an underwater shipwreck that had a pile of gold with tentacles and an eye sticking out of them, moving around and looking at you. Naturally, a lot of players saw this as a teaser of things to come and began to go nuts with Old God speculation; though, our own Liz Harper brought up a good point and said this could be a reference to Critical Role’s second campaign. It seems that sometime since then Blizzard decided to remind everyone this was just an Easter egg and changed it hammer the point home.

Those are some of the Easter eggs I’ve found while playing Dragonflight and I really enjoyed discovering them. What are some Easter eggs you’ve found — in any game — that you enjoyed finding? Share them with us!
