The Queue: Dog Days
The weeks are flying by but every day itself just drags. We’ve turned the corner to the super hot part of summer, and I’m basically spending all day in a dark room with air conditioning, reading a book like our Hearthstone writer Ted‘s new novel, The Key to Reality, until someone makes me — ugh — go do something.
This is The Queue, where you ask us questions, and technically answering is doing something. Ugh.
Doing laundry, I accidentally yeeted a sock over the dryer. I wasn’t sure at the time, but when its mate came up by itself, I looked with a light and saw it. Wasn’t quite sure how to get it out, but then remembered my cheap, cheap, $0.11 backscratcher. I used that to hook the sock and pull it up the side of the wall to where I could grab it and then put it in the laundry basket for next week with its mate.
Resulting QftQ: What’s a really inexpensive item that you have that’s proved really useful?
The water bottle we got for free (asterisk, because American) from the hospital when I had my 2nd baby. It’s kind of similar to this one on Amazon. It’s insulated, holds nearly a full liter of water, with measuring lines so you can keep track of how much you’re drinking. It has both a straw hole and a spout with a grid to catch ice cubes. It’s too big for cup holders in the car, but it’s so good there are fights over who gets to use it around the house, regularly.
Also, I use toothpicks to do everything from car detailing to woodworking to gardening to nail art. They’re a really versatile, cheap little thing to keep around the house.
Q4tQ: do you think post-50 leveling in Diablo IV is too slow? Asking because I just hit 52 tonight, and at my current rate, I can expect to hit 100 sometime in 2025.
You know, it’s funny, I keep sort of forgetting that World Tiers are a thing. I was slogging my way through the slice of 45-50 after I’d finished the story, felt like I was just spinning my wheels XP-wise as I was unlocking all my renown junk. And then all of a sudden, I bumped it up to WT2, and the increase to difficulty wasn’t all that substantial while all of a sudden I was earning tons more XP.
If you feel like you’re not making much headway, it may be time to adjust your WT. And, that said, yes, the levels do get quite a bit lengthier as they get higher.
Bacardi Boop is the next drink I’m gonna order. I have no idea what’s in it, so what’s in it?
The classic Bacardi Cocktail is probably what I’d call a Bacardi Boop. It skips the tropical flavors of a lot of other rum cocktails in favor of punchy lime and bright grenadine for color. It also packs quite a punch in a tiny space, not bogged down with ice or blended ingredients.
- 2 oz Bacardi
- 3/4 oz lime juice
- 1/2 oz grenadine
Shake together with ice, then strain into a coupe or martini glass. The real “boop” is garnishing with a maraschino cherry.
QftQ: What are some of the best and most memorable Theme Songs to you? What makes a theme song memorable to you, or iconic?
With apologies to Mitch on how hard it’s going to be to find questions tomorrow, good theme songs should stand alone, not be pulled from a longer piece that already existed — sorry Frugal Gourmet and Scrubs. Even if they fit perfectly and are iconic in their own right, it feels like cheating. I’m also going to exclude instrumental-only songs, because while you can sing Sanford and Son or the X-Files themes, it’s not all that easy. Karaoke and shower concerts are crucial.
There are a few answers that work here but I’m pretty confident in saying, for all of the above as well as the sentiment the song expresses making it that much more timeless, the best theme song is The Golden Girls, especially when you get into cover versions. A close second to Cheers.
