If Demon Hunters got a third spec, what do you think it should be?
As you’re likely aware by now, the Evoker class in World of Warcraft got a third spec, Augmentation, in Dragonflight patch 10.1.5 — leaving Demon Hunters behind as the only class in the game with no more than two specs, despite having been added years earlier. Since the WoW developers have now demonstrated that it’s possible for a class to get a new specialization added to it — and in the middle of an expansion, even — Demon Hunter players everywhere see a glint of hope that they, too, might get a third spec added to them one day.
The Demon Hunter class has a melee DPS spec in Havoc and a tanking spec in Vengeance. If we’re being honest, it’s hard to imagine that a healing spec would be given to them — healing just doesn’t seem to fit the Demon Hunter fantasy at all. It’s also difficult to see the class getting another tanking spec; no class in WoW has two different tanking specs, after all, as there just doesn’t seem to be a need for it. That would leave us with a few possibilities: another melee DPS spec as an alternative to Havoc or a ranged DPS spec.
Personally, I favor a ranged option for the class. Even here, there are multiple possible ways they could go about it. One would be a magic-based spec, using Fel energy to bombard enemies from afar, emulating spellcasting demons to wreak destruction. Another would be a more traditional weapon-based ranged spec, either getting the ability to throw their warglaives, like we’ve seen the elves do time and again, or perhaps even taking a page from Diablo 3 Demon Hunters and equipping ranged weapons. (Hunters would finally need to share them!)
But Augmentation Evokers also opened up the idea of support specs, which function as DPS, but whose abilities boost the damage of the other party or raid members more than actually deal damage themselves. It’s still a little early to have a verdict if the Augmentation experiment was successful or not, but so far, it has seen some viability and found its way into groups. If new specs are to be added to the game, there’s a distinct chance that they might also be designed to fit into that new paradigm.
So, what do you think? Should Demon Hunters get a third spec, and what should it be? Would you prefer another melee spec, or a ranged one — and for the latter, would it be based on spellcasting, or on physical damage? And should it use the new support mold like Augmentation Evokers do?
