How often do you take breaks from World of Warcraft?

A game like World of Warcraft can easily dominate one’s playing time, and a large part of its audience has it as their primary game — or even as their only game. WoW features an always-online universe where the developers are regularly delivering new content, which means that outside of the dreaded content lulls, it’s rare for one to find themselves with “nothing to do.” Most players are constantly invested into something — whether it’s their raid team, their Mythic+ group, their PVP grind, or simply finishing all the quests and collecting all the rewards from the various open world systems. But some of us — maybe most of us — need a break from all of that every once in a while.

The more casual types of players are happy to renew their subscriptions as soon as a new major patch is released, explore that new content for a few weeks — maybe a couple months — and then unsubscribe until the next big content drop. Others are more “permanently” invested into the game, rarely unsubscribing — perhaps even taking advantage of the 6-month or 12-month subscription plans, since they know they’ll be playing for all of that time. Yet even those players might decide to take some time off — and when that happens, those breaks tend to be longer.

I find myself in the latter group. I usually keep myself subscribed to WoW for long periods of time, always finding something to do — whether it’s exploring the new content, trying out old content that I haven’t done yet, or simply leveling and gearing some alts. WoW can be an almost infinite source of content. But when I do find myself a bit burned out, I tend to walk away for several months in order to fully recharge. During those months, I usually don’t even keep up with the game all that much: I really need to get my mind off of it in order to reinvigorate my desire to play — and that method seems to work well for me.

What about you? How do you consume all the content that WoW has to offer? Do you find yourself constantly subscribed, or do you unsubscribe and re-subscribe with some regularity? How often do you need to take a break from the game, and how long are those breaks, so that you can come back fully recharged and ready to play some more?
