What other gaming genres do you think Warcraft should emulate?

It’s probably unfair to say Plunderstorm is a ripoff of Fortnite — unfair to Fortnite, that is. The new World of Warcraft implementation of the Battle Royale genre is very light compared to it, but that’s ok! I’m not here to criticize a new free (if subbed) game mode. Instead, it’s got me thinking: what other genre of games could the developers implement by leveraging the existing in-game assets?

It’s important to note that this isn’t the first time another game has gotten representation in WoW — anyone else remember Peacebloom vs Ghouls? It’s still in the game, although I don’t think they ever implemented the promised endless mode. Obviously Pet Battles share many similarities to Pokemon. Plunderstorm is different though, being a distinct mode independent of Retail or Classic. It made wonder what else could work in a similar manner.

Top of the list is probably something similar to the roguelite reverse bullet hell Vampire Survivors. Its gameplay is basic and I could easily see it replicated with just the Plunderstorm abilities; while not every one of them would be useful, there’s enough AOE and mobility that could be reused. If they’d rather make it fresher they could focus more on weapons than spells, or provide options to play any of existing classes.

Speaking of roguelites, there’s also Hades that could be the model for a new game mode. The main impediment to this mode is that there really isn’t a “space” in-game comparable to the Underworld in Hades, but what if you were to fashion something out of say Icecrown Citadel or Ulduar? You could those assets to create some random procedurally-generated levels with the occasional prebuilt boss level. Some abilities would be gained just for the run while there could be a more permanent talent tree to help you improve… and it just occurred to me: I’m describing Torghast. So simply take the programming framework for Torghast, replace the graphics with the desired location, and voila — brand new game mode!

What other gaming genres do you think the Warcraft team should try to emulate with the existing assets? Would you play a WoW version of Vampire Survivors or Hades? What about something tactical, like a Tower Defense or an RTS game? Heck, why not Warcraft: Orc vs Humans Reborn as a new adjacent mode? Or do you think new game genres should be kept distinct from the base game?
