The Queue: Rook flirts
Not just with Varric, either. Rook flirts with literally everyone/everything in this game.
Hi. I’m Matt. This is the Queue.
Eno: Hulkenberg is a funny name for what appears to be a tall, delicate elven noblewoman
MusedMoose: It’s her last name/family name, but according to her bio, she’s gone by it for so long that she treats it like her first name.
She’s also a knight, a roussainte (not an elf), and is the party’s tank early on, so she’s definitely not delicate. :P
Eno: Well, I did say “appears.” What is a roussainte :P
MusedMoose: Heh! All the people of the world are part of different tribes, and most of them look like humans with some small changes, like ears or horns or wings. Roussainte are one of those tribes. One of M:ReF’s major themes is the problems with discrimination among the tribes and the desire for unity and equal treatment.
This is the exact same sophistry that the Zelda games have been attempting to get away with for decades. Look, you can slap a new name on them all you want, you can call them Hylians or Roussainte or Aeldari, but the fact is once you stick long ears and a certain build on a character, it doesn’t matter. Even Vulcans get confused for Elves.
I don’t have a dog in this fight, really, because I cannot let myself get sucked into yet another 100+ hour timesink when I’ve got this game going, but it’s like trying to create a fantasy setting where you have short people who live underground and call them Golar, and willowy big pointy eared people who live in magical forests that you call Hurrans. Everyone is gonna call them Dwarves and Elves.
Everyone.
Q4TQ: What’s your favorite time to listen to Christmas music? Mine is on my drive home in the dark from work. It’s relaxing and it puts me in the holiday spirit.
Rather than be a cynical “Never, I hate Christmas” Grinchypants, I’ll say that I love Carol of the Bells, especially the Trans Siberian Orchestra’s version, and I listen to it once we’re in December and usually for a month or so into the next year.
do you think it would be a good idea for some companies to make full animated movies before they commit to a game.
thinking about overwatch and concord here. How what ppl REALLY love the story of overwatch more than the game and how that’s kept it popular. How imo concords appeal seem to be focused on the characters personalities (sort of suicide squad, Gusrdians of the galaxy, dnd hot vibe),and if a 1 hour 30 minute movie for concord came out before the game got out of alpha people would have latched onto the characters personalities and relationships(instead of being unimpressed by the visuals).
its true alot of video game adaoptions of movies seem to be bad but recently not the case when they actually try(ex marvel rivals is aimed at comic and cartoon fans imo but capitalizes on the mcu with skins, combo and mvp intros). And movies “bomb” if they barely make their expenses back which might seem bad as a movie studio but “we made everyone in the world learn about our ip and didnt lose any money” seems like it would be good for a game company. And certainly, we all want adaptions to be made by the studios who make the games.
i highly doubt a 20 min video on amazon Prime will bring back concord. Im sure everyone is fored already. But maybe the show will show some studios they should have been making this stuff from the start
On the one hand, I’m still a fan of the look of Final Fantasy The Spirits Within, despite the fact that there wasn’t something I’d call a story even at gunpoint in even a frame of that movie. On the other hand, I think if they’d just made a Godfall movie instead of a game, they could have wasted just as much money as they did on the game without even giving you some gameplay to take the taste of the bolted together reanimated zombie of a plot out of your mouth.
Essentially I’m saying that you make an interesting point, but it depends on if there’s a story that can be condensed into something watchable. Some games tell a story in a way that wouldn’t work in a short burst like that. It’s one of the reasons I think current video game adaptations that aren’t bad had to be TV series in format to give them room to breathe, there’s just too much there for a short 2 hours.
I think Concord was always doomed, partially because the environment seems toxic. People seem really quick to decide they hate a game (or a movie or a TV show or a book) and unwilling to allow it to exist without pouring vitriol and scorn upon it, and I don’t know that trying to focus on the characters in a movie would have helped with that. I’ve seen some really apoplectic takes on games and other media lately, and I don’t know that Concord was ever going to survive. I don’t know that Overwatch would have survived if it released this year, to be honest.
Q4tQ Are there any old obscure games you’d like to see given the remake/remaster treatment? I always dug Spider The Video Game for the PS1 and would love an updated version.
I know the Xeno series exists, but it’s not really related to the original game, which was and is the best turn based JRPG ever made. Every so often I remember that this game was created to be Final Fantasy VII and I wonder what the world where that happened would look like.
maaaaaan I’m not at all excited about Siren Isle =/
just don’t have a ton of interest in new content that isn’t a whole new tier/season, I guess. And I’m not a fan of “get this new special item and make it stronger with gems” gameplay. it’s borrowed power-lite.
oh well. not a huge deal.
Well, you could always take a break and play another game for a while.
I mean, there are like sixty billion JRPG’s out there and you own most of them, right? Or heck, go dig Xenogears out and give that a shot.
QftQ: In 10 years, whom do you think will be the dominant WoW NPC main cast? Should/will WoW have mostly transitioned beyond current lore figures of importance?
I mean, it’s barely changed in 20 years. Anduin was technically King in 2004, he’ll probably still be around in 2034. Jaina, Thrall, still here.
Maybe some of the older or least interesting characters like Genn might die, and we might get some promotions like Thrall’s kids or Faerin Lothar into prominence, but otherwise I expect to see a lot of the same faces.
Oh, and of course Arthas is coming back as a fully redeemed Paladin just to screw with us.
Okay, that’s the Queue.
Seriously, she flirts with everyone.
