The Queue: Visiting the Allosaurus Annex

Saurophaganax maximus was thought to be a very large predatory theropod that lived in the famous Morrison Formation of Jurassic North America. Several of the bones assigned to this genus were very similar to, but significantly larger than, those of Allosaurus specimens which had already been found in the Morrison, while others were unusual for those of a theropod at all, especially some of the vertebrae.

Turns out that’s because those ‘unusual’ bones were in fact sauropod bones, very likely from a Diplodocid like Apatosaurus or Diplodocus. The rest of the bones, however, were still extremely similar to but larger versions of bones from an Allosaurus. When the genus Saurophaganax (which means ‘Lord of the Lizard Eaters’ or ‘King Lizard Eater”) was declared a nomen dubium, due to the Sauropod bones, the rest of the material was assigned to genus Allosaurus, and given the name Allosaurus anax.

Allosaurus anax was a very large, very robustly built species of Allosaurus, with some estimates putting it at over 10 meters and weighing up to five and a half metric tones, which is over 11,0000 pounds. That’s like 8 male polar bears. And I can’t hear the name without thinking some variation on “Let’s all go to the Allosaurus annex” which let’s face it, I’d be down for.

What weird media consumption quirks do you exhibit? For some reason I always must start at the beginning of anything. I won’t pick up Amazing Video Game III without playing through AVG I & 2 first, with very few exceptions. I’m almost done with Star Trek: The Original Series, so soon I’ll be able to watch TNG for the first time.

I’m a little disappointed this isn’t about prehistoric critters, but what the heck, I’ll answer it anyway.

  • If too many people tell me I have to watch a show/movie or play a game or read a book, I won’t do it. I still haven’t seen Firefly. I especially won’t partake of that media if the people recommending it seem to have a weirdly aggressive need to get me to watch it.
  • Sometimes I deliberately play a game that doesn’t play anything like the game I was playing just so I don’t have to worry about muscle memory.
  • I like to consume media in the order it was released rather than in any later chronological order established. So I would always watch Star Wars in the 4-5-6, 1-2-Clone Wars cartoon-3 order. I haven’t rewatched the sequel movies yet, but if I did I’d probably go TFA-Rogue One-TLJ-Solo and I don’t know if I’d watch the last one again. I can, however, easily sit down and just watch any of these movies as a singular viewing in any order, or play any game in a series without having to play the others.

Q4tQ: Should games have more unexpected game over screens, like when you make Flayn a dancer in Three Houses?

Yes.

Oh, look, it’s that time of year where I have to take our anti-bribery and human trafficking training!

Without looking at the comments, I wonder how many people made a joke about you learning how to traffic humans?

Ah, six. Well, six comments. More like four people.

Thank you for being you, Queue. Special thumbs up for the people who were confused by the idea of human traffickers who were strongly anti-bribery.

Q4tQ What major North American city would you like to visit? Any specific attractions you want to check out there?

I am honestly struggling to think of one I want to visit but haven’t. I mean, maybe Mexico City but there are a lot of reasons I would ultimately not be comfortable doing that. But I’ve been to Seattle, Portland OR, San Francisco, Sacramento, LA, San Diego, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Dallas, Austin, New Orleans, Chattanooga, Miami, Orlando, Atlanta, Savanna, Cinncinnati, Cleveland, Topeka, Kansas City, Wichita, St. Louis, Gary, Chicago, Philadelphia, Buffalo, Albany, New York City, Hartford, Providence (grew up there), Boston, Worcester, Bangor, Portland MA, Salem, Concord, Salt Lake City, Boulder, Denver, Provo, Halifax, Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton, and Vancouver.

I know there are other cities in North America, I’m just not really feeling the need to visit them. Now, I’d really love to visit places that aren’t major cities, like various parks.

Q4tQ What do you think of the name of patch 11.1.7 “Legacy of Arathor”?

To quote Arthonos:

Is the subtitle “Back to Arathi Highlands Again!”, because if so I’m out.

BILLY BO BOB BRAIN

So, I hear Blizzard is going to incorporate more addons functionalities. Is there any way to properly fix this mess?
I mean, they make rotations complicated enough to warrant a built-in rotation helper, which they will add instead of making rotations less math-intensive and more intuitive to give us time to dodge and CC and do other stuff.
But this is just as much a community problem, isn’t it? Simplification of mechanics to make decision-making Auras and DBMs less necessary would certainly generate cries of “dumbing down the game,” probably from the same crowd that relies on every crutch they can for advantage.
The same goes for the shortage of tanks: people will demand their tanks to know every route (which they themselves don’t), and if the dungeons were made more linear people would complain, even though they don’t trace routes themselves, they just copy those from videos and addons.
Is there no way out?

As my blindness has progressed and worsened, I’ve gone from can hit his rotation fine to his complex web of keybinds is impenetrable to all but the most wizened of the Order of the Click.

So for me, it’s kind of an accessibility issue. One of the things that keeps me from playing and enjoying certain classes is absolutely the complexity of their rotations. But at the end of the day, I don’t know that I want the game to just hit my rotation for me? It’s starting to feel like some of the worst Final Fantasy games, where you click one button and the characters on the screen just do stuff. I want to feel like I’m involved and Rotation Assistance as it’s been explained to me thus far doesn’t help me there.

But I can definitely see why some people would like it, and yes, the whole they’re dumbing down the game argument does come off as wildly ableist to me. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Q4tQ: how often do you change specs, loadouts, or whatever else as you play? Asking because I’m thirty-odd levels into my necromancer for the new season of Diablo IV, and I’ve realized that I’m playing the same shadow build based around blowing up corpses that I did back in season three. So I’m about to give blood a try. I have no idea how it’ll turn out, but it should be fun.

It depends on the game. For example, in Diablo 3 and now Diablo 4 I like to mess around and experiment with new builds, so fairly frequently there, especially as gear that favors different builds drops. I’ll switch from a make everything explode with blood globes to spinning, spinning, always spinning as soon as I can.

I’m more conservative in WoW. I think it’s because gear that really changes a build is harder to attain there.

Okay, that’s the Queue for today, y’all. Take care. Visit the Allosaurus annex daily.
