Haranir will become an Allied Race in Midnight: here’s what we know about them so far

Rumors of a Haranir Allied Race have been swirling ever since they made an appearance in an early trailer for The War Within, but Haranir are finally becoming a playable race in World of Warcraft Midnight. This new race will be available to Horde or Alliance, like the Dracthyr, Pandaran, and Earthen, which makes sense as they have no ties to either faction. They’ll be able to play Druid, Shaman, Monk, Mage, Priest, Hunter, Warlock, Rogue and Warrior, and the Druid will have unique form. That includes the quillbat we’ve seen some shift into for flying, but also a pangolin form — though we don’t know what role the pangolin fills, and have no details on their other forms.

The Haranir racials are a little nondescript at the moment but we have brief descriptions of their abilities: they can summon an area of roots that heals allies or damages enemies, a bonus to critical strike damage and healing (potentially similar to Tauren), bonus damage and resistance to Aberrations, and a fast travel ability between World Tree roots that will be similar to Dark Iron Mole Machines.

This reclusive race seems like an odd choice as an Allied Race. First introduced in The War Within, the Haranir came to us as an underground race of vaguely shamanistic/druidic magic users that believed in harmony with the earth. They lived in seclusion, forbidden to reveal their existence to outsiders, but the threat of the black blood drew Orweyna to approach players as our introduction to this mysterious people. Questing in Azj-Kahet, she was both our guide and our warning against the dangers of the black blood that was seeping into Khaz Algar and corrupting whatever it came in contact with. She appeared again in early patch 11.1, investigating the black blood in the Ringing Deeps and Undermine, but since then there’s been no sign of her, or the Haranir.

We don’t yet know what will drive the Haranir from their seclusion to join us in our fight against Xal’atath — particularly since other Haranir we’ve met haven’t wanted anything to do with the larger world — but in Midnight we’ll visit their home of Harandar and recruit them after a quest chain. While we don’t know the details, it doesn’t appear that you’ll have to finish entire expansion to recruit them, as you did with the Earthen, but you’ll have to make at least some progress in the story. It’s possible you’ll need to play through Harandar, which you can choose to go to after leaving Eversong Woods,

But what would a new race be without a new zone to tell their tale? Harandar is a full-scale zone in Midnight, and it will no doubt answer some of our questions about why the Haranir want to join us. In patch 12.0, we’ll venture back underground, deep into their home of Harandar, a place cradled in World Tree roots and filled with iridescent cordyceps. If you’re a fan of Zangarmarsh (or possibly The Last Of Us), then you’re going to love this zone. One of the mysteries we’ll explore is the identity of the Haranir’s mysterious Goddess, who apparently set Orweyna on the trail of the black blood.  Only referred to as “Goddess,” they do everything in her service and to protect pieces of the world that they feel are directly connected to her.  She is a mystery, though a few cutscenes have shown a suspiciously familiar Blue-Gold-Orange energy that might remind some of their island days in BFA.

Haranir will be joining the game in Midnight — so, no, you won’t be able to get a head start on leveling one in Legion Remix — some time in the first half of 2026. Until then, we’ll be here wondering when Blizzard will add playable Tuskarr and Ethereals.
