How to make dyes for your housing decor in Midnight
World of Warcraft Player Housing comes with the promise of near-infinite customization, including the ability to dye your furniture and decor items. Dyeing your items is simple: just grab the color of dye you want, head to your house, select the piece of furniture you want to dye, set the color of dye you want for each component of the decor (this varies depending on the item), and click to apply it. You can preview all of the colors before you apply dyes, which is a good thing because dyes are consumable items and you’ll use one up each time you apply a color to a piece of decor.
Dyes are all player-crafted via Alchemy or Inscription (and my guess is that players who make them are going to make a killing selling them in Midnight). Currently in the Midnight alpha test, dyes are relatively easy to make and each color can be made from a variety of different herbs found throughout Azeroth: there are herbs from each expansion that you can use to craft each color of dye, so you can get your reagents from practically anywhere. Making each pigment requires 10 herbs, and making each dye requires one pigment. It’s possible that this system could change, but I suspect that Blizzard wants dyes to be easily accessible to players and wants to keep the requirements simple. Having a wide range of herbs that can be used for each pigment also means the market for herbs won’t go (completely) crazy with overpriced Peacebloom. (Well, we’ll wait and see on that.)
Remember: this information is based on Midnight alpha testing and could change.
Whether you’re looking forward to making dyes or you just need to know how to get them, here’s what you need to know about decor dyes in Midnight.
What skill level do I need to craft dyes? Right now, there are no skill requirements for making dyes: you have to have either Alchemy or Inscription (Classic), but you don’t need to level it up. A single point will suffice to allow you to make dyes.
Can I level Alchemy and Inscription by dye crafting? No, you do not get skill points by crafting dyes.
How do I craft dyes? Making dye is a two-step process: first you need to make a dye pigment in your crafting menu with Classic recipes. Each color of pigment requires 10 of the same type of herb, but a variety of different herbs can be used to make each pigment color. Once you have pigments, turn them into dye at the dye crafting station inside your neighborhood, which will be in the central neighborhood hub. All you have to do is click the dye crafting station to see all of your crafting options.
How can I buy or sell dyes? Dyes are not soulbound or warbound, so enterprising Alchemists and Scribes can sell dye on the Auction House. It does not currently appear that you can make a crafting order for dye, as it is not an item available in the standard crafting interface.
How do I know what color a dye is? The dye crafting interface does not include a preview of the dye’s color beyond its icon, which includes a small swipe of color. However if you go to your house and attempt to dye an item you will be able to see all available dye colors, whether you have them in your inventory or not, and get a better idea of how they look. Another great resource is this site made by Leiyan and Ardastar from the Architects of Azeroth Discord, which shows you every dye color applied to a selection of furniture.
What dyes are available? Here’s the current list of dyes and their material costs — be aware that no Midnight-level herbs are currently crafting reagents, but this is the alpha so that could change. There are plenty of color options to choose from!

Again, I want to remind you that this information comes from the Midnight alpha test and is subject to change at any time. (And while I think crafters will be able to make bank crafting and selling these, I don’t recommend trying to corner the market on Sungrass just yet, because the materials could change wildly before launch.) If things change, I’ll update this post with the latest information.
