Check out these adorable animals utterly unbothered by the winter weather

The zoos may be closed due to weather, but that’s not stopping their residents from enjoying it. Yes, even the locations swamped by snowfall managed to get some quality time in for their cold-loving residents. So whether you’re snowed in or roasting in the Southern Hemisphere, join us as we delight in some otter-ly cute animals enjoying the snow.

These gentoo penguins at the Edinburgh Zoo practiced their snow catching skills last week. For them, waddling across the snow and ice is second nature. Gentoo penguins are found mainly around the Antarctica Peninsula and islands and landmasses at the end of South America, including the Falkland Islands (Malvinas) and South Georgia Islands.

It was a march of the penguins at the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium. Groups of their gentoo penguin population march waddle and slid forth in this cheerful YouTube short. I love how they just sally forth, without any care for the humans in their proximity.

The baby otters of Tanganyika Wildlife Park experienced snow for the first time! Tanganyika first hit our radars with the videos documenting the antics of their baby pygmy hippo, Mars, so it’s wonderful to see their baby otters frolicking around too. This group is specifically comprised of Asian small-clawed otters, found in southern India, southern China, Indonesia, the Philippines, and around Southeast Asia.

If you’re visiting (or local to) Goddard, KS, you can book a baby otter meet & greet (adults only) or even swim with the otters!

Zoo Knoxville‘s red pandas were so unbothered by the snow they were snacking outside. These pictures are of a trio of red pandas from the zoo’s population, enjoying some sliced fruit in their outdoor habitat. Now, don’t be fooled by their name; red pandas are not closely related to giant pandas and instead are part of a unique taxonomic group called Ailuridae. The endangered species is found in the forests of the Himalayas and mountains through Nepal, India, Bhutan, Myanmar, and China.

If you’re visiting (or local to) Knoxville, TN, you can attend the zoo’s free Red Panda Encounter on the weekends to learn more about the species from their animal care team.

These western lowland gorillas may not be out in the snow at the Cleveland Zoo, but they still received containers of it to enjoy indoors. Two of their younger gorillas, Jameela and Kayembe are probably the most interested in their snow bounty, and try all sorts of activities to start — digging in the snow, licking it, stepping on the bowl to try to get closer, and finally dumping it out. Western lowland gorillas are critically endangered, but difficult to track as they inhabit dense, remote rainforests; they are natively found in Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and the Republic of Congo.

Kallu the polar bear made the most of the snowfall in Saint Louis, turning a zoo closure into a personal playtime. Rolling in the snow, chasing a ball into the water and a bowl on the land, even using the slippery surface to slide into the water — Kallu does it all! Polar bears are a threatened species found within the Arctic Circle’s countries — Greenland, Norway, Russia, Canada, and Alaska within the United States.

Kallu may not be available, but other animal friends are available to watch regularly at the Saint Louis Zoo. Check out their habitat webcam, which rotates between enclosures on a schedule, and their penguin webcam is always available for viewing (after 5pm, the footage is pre-recorded).

Stay warm and safe out there!
