Diablo 2 Resurrected: Reign of the Warlock DLC brings new class, quality of life improvements

It’s 2026, and Diablo 2 is getting a new DLC: Reign of the Warlock. That’s right, the game, which originally launched in 2000 (with an expansion in 2001 and a remaster in 2021), is now getting a DLC for its Diablo 2 Resurrected remaster. (Reminder: it is currently the year 2026.) The new Warlock class headlines this update, a caster class that uses the forbidden magic of the Vizjerei to bind demons, harness chaotic magics, and wield enchanted eldritch weapons. When wielding weapons, Warlocks levitate them rather than holding them with their hands, which gives them an extra bonus: they can wield a 2-handed weapon and an off-hand at the same time, unlocking some new gearing options. The class is an interesting counterpoint to the elementally-focused Sorceress, and their eldritch weapon skills may give them the option to play a hybrid style that jumps in and out of melee, similar to how an Amazon can jab with their javelins at close range or throw them from a distance.

No matter how you look at it, a new class — 25 years after its last new class — shakes things up in Diablo 2.

And you can play the Warlock right now. Reign of the Warlock was available for purchase the moment it was announced, selling for $25 on Battle.net, Steam, Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch.

While Blizzard calls this a DLC, it’s a pretty significant update. Beyond the addition of the Warlock, there are some notable quality of life improvements, including:

  • The Chronicle: An in-game journal cataloging all of the items you’ve collected. Players could already use third party tools to track information like this, but now it’s built in to the game. Completing portions of the Chronicle will also grant rewards that will let you “flaunt your renowned prowess.”
  • Loot Filter: Customize the loot you see, so you can configure the game to only show you drops that you’re actually interested in picking up. And, yes, loot filters are coming to Diablo 2 before they come to Diablo 4.
  • Terror Zone updates: Players will now be able to select which zones become Terror Zones with a new consumable item, offering more control over where you play. And watch out, because Heralds of Terror now stalk hell difficulty, and they’ll be hunting you rather than the other way around. When you get through each Terror Zone and defeat the act boss, you’ll find a statue… combine all five to access a new encounter: the Colossal Ancients.
  • Colossal Ancients encounter: In this gauntlet, every mob you defeat makes the rest stronger. But if you manage to slay one of the Colossal Ancients, they will drop a unique, powerful jewel.
  • Stash improvements: Players get two new stash tabs, and items stored in your stash will now stack.
  • More character slots: Players get two more character slots.
  • New items: New uniques, runewords, and Warlock-specific gear and sets.

But some of the charm of Diablo 2 Resurrected is the chance to go back in time and experience the original game. For players who don’t want to play alongside Warlocks, you can choose to stick to the classic D2R experience or move them forward into Reign of the Warlock. You can always move a character forward into Reign of the Warlock, but one you switch, you can’t go back.

You can buy Reign of the Warlock right now for $25, or, if you don’t own Diablo 2 Resurrected, you can buy the Infernal edition that includes D2R and Reign of the Warlock for $40. In addition to the DLC, both of these include bonus items for other games: the Forbidden Tethers Back Trophy and Kervek the Putrid pet for Diablo 4, and the Horadric Cube decor for World of Warcraft player housing. These bonuses don’t exactly make it a must buy, but I’ll never say no to extras.

Again, Reign of the Warlock is available right now, so jump in and enjoy a brand new class in a 26 year old game.
