How does the Trial of Style event work in Midnight, and where’s my free transmog!?

World of Warcraft’s semi-annual Trial of Style is here, and that means free transmog — sort of. The way we swap our appearances went through some big changes in Midnight, so here’s the scoop on exactly how transmog will work during Azeroth’s premier week-long fashion event.

The twice-yearly Trial of Style is happening right now, from March 20-27, 2026. You can queue up for the event with Transmogrifier NPCs (if you’re in Silvermoon City look for Warpweaver Diveera inside of Second Identity in Murder Row) scattered around major cities and then compete against 5 other players to see whose ensemble best fits the randomly-selected theme. You’ll have a short time to select an outfit or come up with a brand new one using your entire wardrobe, and after a quick showcase and voting session the prizes are handed out in the form of Trial of Style Tokens.

You’ll receive a decent amount of tokens each time you participate in the Trial whether you come out on top or put together a look that doesn’t get a single vote. The rewards that you can purchase from the event vendors are, unsurprisingly, an extensive collection of transmog appearances.

The question that everyone has been asking ever since the emotional roller coaster of transmog cost changes started last summer is: will transmog be totally and completely free during the week of the event? For past Trials of Style, swapping outfits during the run of the event required zero gold whether you were participating in the Trial or had never heard of it.

This time around you will receive an extra temporary transmog slot that lasts for the week of Trial of Style, and changes to that slot will not cost anything. This slot will be available both inside the event space and out in the rest of Azeroth. So participating in the event still won’t cost you a single copper, and you’ll get a week-long chance to try out questing in some new threads without breaking the bank.

Right now the event can soft-lock you out of participating if you’re not careful. Be sure to have your Trial of Style transmog slot selected before you accept the summons, or you won’t be able to change your appearance in any way inside the instance. You may also need to disable a lot of the complicated Situations you have constructed, because those can swap you off of the Trial of Style slot when zoning in. Worse still, you’ll be hit with a 30-minute Dungeon Deserter debuff if you leave the group.

The next chance you’ll get to walk the runway and feel fine as phoenix fire won’t be until the next iteration of the Trial of Style, from August 1-8. Head to your local transmogrifier for some free-ish fashion fun.
