How do you feel about the Worldsoul Saga as a trilogy?

On Monday, World of Warcraft Executive Producer and Vice President Holly Longdale logged onto Discord for a fireside chat with players and community members. While we were not treated to the next entry in her traditionally stunning jacket wardrobe due to the audio-only nature of the event, we did get some insight into the thought process behind many of Azeroth’s recent and future developments.

The very first question posed to Longdale from the community focused on what comes next for World of Warcraft. We are currently in the middle chapter of the three-part Worldsoul Saga, an epic trilogy meant to serve as a culmination of the first two decades of Azeroth’s story. Will the next installments after The Last Titan come in trilogies as well, or will we return to a single-expansion cycle?

Longdale began by explaining a bit of the reasoning behind wrapping The War Within, Midnight, and The Last Titan into one huge story arc: the return of Executive Creative Director Chris Metzen and his narrative idea that could only be done justice with three dedicated expansions. As for what comes next, Longdale says that them team generally knows where we’re going but is carefully gauging the general feeling towards the trilogy-style release shake-up among the playerbase before deciding on the structure of future expansions.

So here’s our chance to give that feedback to Blizzard! Personally, I have mixed feelings towards the mechanics of the Worldsoul Saga —  most of them positive. I think that an epic three-part story is an extremely appropriate way to pop an Azerite-plated capstone on the first 20-something years of our adventures on Azeroth. The narrative is lined up to give answers to some of our longest-standing questions as well as closure to some of the longest-running story threads in the game.

My primary complaint with the Worldsoul Saga stems all the way back to its BlizzCon 2023 reveal. While Metzen’s delivery was impeccable and he did give us a tongue-in-cheek spoiler warning, I feel like I would currently much happier if I hadn’t been given summaries of each of the three expansions from the get-go. I feel a little less engaged in the current battle against the forces of darkness knowing that things are on track to go so sideways that the Titans themselves will have to show up to try and fix them.

If there were another double- or triple-expansion in our future, I’d be much happier just knowing that the first chapter might not wrap up as neatly as past installments in Azeroth’s story. My instincts tell me that we’ll follow the Worldsoul Saga with at least one standalone expansion, which I feel is still a perfectly acceptable way to progress our characters and the vibrant, detailed world they hail from. After that, I wouldn’t be opposed to another saga or even something entirely new.

So what are your thoughts on the current epic trilogy? Have the events of The War Within and Midnight seemed more grand knowing that they’re part of something larger, or are you eager to return to more isolated chapters of World of Warcraft?
