How to earn the latest Tier 2 remastered transmog (and more) from Void Assaults (hint: bring your lucky rabbit’s foot)

Midnight’s patch 12.0.5 added several Void-themed world events that involve repelling the leftover void forces that are still wreaking havoc across Eversong Woods and Zul’Aman: Void Strikes, Void Incursions, and Ritual Sites. The rewards associated with these new events are a bit of a good news / bad news situation for those of us who enjoy new mid-season things to do and collecting cosmetics.

The good news is that all three events award Field Accolades, a new currency that can be used to acquire a host of void-recolored weapons and shadowy remastered Tier 2 sets. There’s also the usual gear, mount, pet, and decor rewards for participating and excelling at these events, including a void capybara.

The bad news is that obtaining the specific transmog ensemble that you want is going to involve quite a bit of luck, as each of these Tier 2 sets is gated behind a blind box system that will have you earning dozens of appearances for classes you don’t play just to complete another Judgment recolor.

So let’s talk about how to continue our fight against the void, all for the sake of new transmog (and also a capybara).

What are Void Assaults, anyway?

There are three new events to participate in that will earn you progress towards all of the new rewards. You could be forgiven for not being able to keep them straight given their confusingly similar names, so here’s a breakdown:

  • Void Strikes are small outdoor events that involve a few minutes of fending off forces such as Ethereals or cultists
  • Void Incursions are larger outdoor multi-stage events that begin after a certain number of Void Strikes have been completed in a zone
  • Ritual Sites are two new instances that players can take on solo or in groups, with the ability to customize the challenge level more finely than Delves

If you’ve seen the term “Void Assault” thrown about, that is the umbrella term that refers to Strikes and Incursions which are always found in the same zone’s outdoor area. As usual, the best way to earn every single reward associated with these events is to partake in them as often as your mood and attention span allows. Pop between Void Strikes while keeping an eye on the Void Incursion progress bar, then hurry to that location once it’s close to 100%. Run through Ritual Sites at higher difficulties and with more of the challenges active to rack up higher quantities of Field Accolades.

Since these events are max-level end game content, you’ll also find yourself earning rewards like upgrade crests, Voidlight Marl, and Coffer Key Shards. The Voidlight Marl will be particularly important for purchasing the new rewards, so if you’ve already broken your Midnight currency bank on renown track decor and mounts then you’ll need to replenish your wallet before you start browsing.

Where to spend your Field Accolades (and luck)

Once your pockets are full of Field Accolades, it’s time to do some shopping. On an upper level of Silvermoon City just south of the harbor lies the headquarters for the ongoing defense against these pesky Void brouhahas.

Maren Silverwing is your source for weapons, offering a ilevel 246 Champion-track weapon customized for your class and spec for 75 Field Accolades or a 259 Hero-track weapon for a hefty 500. She will also convert any Dark Particles you come across from looting mobs during any of the new events into Field Accolades — stacks of 100 particles can be cashed in for 10 accolades. It’s not catch-up gear, since Field Accolades aren’t Warband-transferable — if you’ve already obtained a high-quality weapon, you’ll be able to focus on cosmetics.

Triam Dawnsetter stands nearby, ready to play the role of cosmetic blind box distributor. For 10 Field Accolades and 200 Voidlight Marl, you can purchase a Cache of Void-Touched Weapons. This contains one of 18 cosmetic weapon appearances at random, all of them being void recolors of weapons that dropped in the original Sunwell Plateau raid back in The Burning Crusade.

You won’t ever get the same appearance twice, but you will have to spend 180 Field Accolades and 3,600 Voidlight Marl to unlock every single one. If you’re hoping for one in particular and don’t care about the rest, it will all come down to luck. I’d really love to grab a shadow-infused Apolyon but I’m not sure I’ll have enough accolades (and luck) built up before the next patch calls my attention elsewhere.

The void-themed Tier 2 re-skins are just as cool as the original remasters and hellish re-colors, but your transmog yak will be straining to carry all of the Field Accolades you’ll need to earn to complete even one of the sets. A single piece of transmog from this lineup will cost 5 Field Accolades and 150 Voidlight Marl. You buy a cache that corresponds with a gear slot (head, wrist, etc.) and you get a random class’s Tier 2 void transmog of that slot.

With 9 gear slots (plus a few doubles) and 13 class sets, you’re looking at 595 Field Accolades and 17,850 Voidlight Marl to unlock each and every one of these outfits. The inability to simply purchase the complete ensembles of the two or three classes you actually play is confusing and infuriating. The prices were steep the last time around for the Diablo crossover, but you could at least plan out which sets you were willing to spend the time grinding out the event for.

With the weapons, at least the other appearances that you’ll earn while hoping for your favorite to drop are cool and usable on their own. What am I ever going to do with the random assortment of armor transmog pieces that I’ll end up with just to complete the Mage set? Let’s hope Blizzard hears the so far overwhelmingly negative feedback on this randomized loot system and lets us directly purchase the next one or two (or ten) Tier 2 recolors.

What Player Housing decor, mounts, and pets are available from Void Assaults and Ritual Sites?

If you’re here for the mounts, pets, and decor items, there’s plenty to go around but it’s also not entirely good news. You have quite a bit of work to do before you unlock the ability to purchase these cosmetics, you’ll still be dropping pocketfuls of Voidlight Marl, and there are a few items that will require yet more fantastic luck to acquire.

The event mount is the Unbound Manawyrm, which requires completion of both the Void Response Team and Ritual Site Distruptor achievements. You’ll need to do quite a bit of challenging leg work to earn those two feats, including 50 Void Assaults and enough Ritual Sites to hit the end of the renown track. Instead of awarding the mount, the achievement merely unlocks the privilege of spending 6,000 Voidlight Marl on it.

Cappy the shadow capybara is a pet that only requires one leg of the meta achievement, Cosmic Exterminator, and will only set you back 1,800 Voidlight Marl. There are also two pets, the Wriggling Capybara and the Curious Lynx Kitten, which have an exceedingly low chance to drop at the end of a Void Strike.

Ritual Sites have their own renown track, and there’s a slew of Void Elf housing decor, two more pets, and a void hawkstrider to earn (although you’ll once again need to purchase them with Voidlight Marl after unlocking them).

Good luck collecting all of these rewards… because you’ll certainly need it.
