Breakfast Topic: On the subject of subjectivity

I don’t hate people who play Rogues or Paladins in WoW, but I hate those classes. I’m not ashamed of this, nor do I think I need to give them another try — I’ve given each plenty of tries. My hatred for these classes doesn’t say anything about the people who like them: it’s purely a matter of not liking how they play. And it’s time I simply accept this. I’m not ever going to enjoy Rogues or Paladins in much the same way as my wife isn’t ever going to get into DK’s despite my best effort. (DK’s are fun as hell to me.)

The thing is, I finally realize that this is my personal bias, and that it is okay to have those biases when it comes to what you like or dislike in playing a game.

It’s not just the stuff you hate, either. The stuff you love is just as subjective. Sure, I love Warriors. But if everybody loved Warriors, the game would be boring. Those Rogues and Paladins I hate playing add distinctiveness and flavor to the game, they made it broader and more interesting just by existing. I may give up in frustration every single time I pick up a Paladin, but the people who don’t do that and the people who play casters (which is almost an alien mindset to me) help make WoW what it is, and keep it from being tedious.

So here’s to you, people I don’t agree with. Keep jumping out of stealth to stab me repeatedly then run away before I get a shot back. You make me scream at my monitor in rage, but better that than everyone be on a Warrior.
