The Queue: The most evil penguin

Welcome back to The Queue, our daily Q&A feature for all of Blizzard’s games! Have a question for the Blizzard Watch staff? Leave it in the comments!

This week’s livestream was a little strange. And by “little strange” I mean that Mitch’s sudden emergence as a shadowy overlord of penguin doom was the least of our problems. But enough about that, let’s get to your questions, shall we?

EROGROTH ASKED:

Question: I was thinking about returning after a rather long break from the game (8 months or so?) and I do not see the scroll of resurrection anymore. I hear Blizz got rid of it. Is there any other method of coming back on a trial basis for a few days before coughing up cash or gold for game time? Thanks.

Scrolls of Resurrection were in fact retired, and replaced with the character boost service. However, players that have taken a break from the game can still roll and play from level 1-20 for free. And if your character was in a guild before they left the game, your starter character can join whatever guild they were in, so you can chat with your old guildmates and see what everyone’s been up to while you were away.

VYRIANTHOR ASKED:

Q4tQ: Why, exactly, did Vashj join Illidan? It’s something the new book never touches on, and it’s clear that Azshara (who’s pretty pro Legion) isn’t on board with him. She also doesn’t really care about magic like the Blood Elves do (or if she does, presumably down in Naz’jatar they have a source, or the other Naga would be trying to nom magic too).

It was a power play, mostly. Illidan was pretty much played by Arthas in Felwood, and consumed the powers of the Skull of Gul’dan for himself. Kil’jaeden got wind of this, and gave Illidan one last chance to prove his worth to the Legion — by destroying the Frozen Throne. Illidan knew this wasn’t something he could accomplish on his own, so he called the naga to the surface and asked for their aid.

Vashj knew who Illidan was. She also knew he was pretty powerful way back during the War of the Ancients — and even more powerful after horking down the Skull of Gul’dan. Power, magical power, was something that Vashj and the rest of the naga appreciated…and Illidan appeared to be as firmly against the Night Elves as they were, which was an additional bonus.

So Vashj stuck with him. Part of me still wonders if this was because Vashj knew that she’d never be as great as Azshara was, and the allegiance was a way of trying to get a leg up on her old boss — but that’s just speculation on my part. It’s based partially on the fact that Vashj didn’t exactly take a ton of convincing to follow Illidan, and partially because of her role later on in Outland — her attempt to bring all the waters of Outland under her control seemed like she was trying to build her own watery empire far from the eyes of Azshara.

ADREAVER ASKED:

Q4tQ: If you could incorporate ONE feature from another MMO, current or past, into WoW, what would it be?

Double-ju…oh wait, we’re getting that.

All right then, we’ll go with the other thing I really loved about Wildstar — their player housing system. I loved the customization, I loved how they incorporated professions and world questing into the mix, and I loved how it really let players go nuts with making a place to call their own. We don’t have that. The garrison wasn’t our own space, it wasn’t someplace to call home, it was headquarters for a war.

CHRTH ASKED:

Q4TQ: Is the Field Photographer title usable at level 1?

I believe so — but I don’t actually have the title. Thank you for the reminder, I’ll add that to the to-do before Legion list!

@CADISTRA ASKED VIA TWITTER:

Do you think they’ll ever update the gryphon/wyvern model across all expacs?

I don’t know! I wish they would — mount and pet models are some of the craziest in terms of showing their age.

@SEANENGARD ASKED VIA TWITTER:

Do you think we’ll ever get a way to see the world pre-Cataclysm? Some sort of phasing or whatnot?

I honestly don’t know. I really miss that pre-Cataclysm world though, and if it’s something that could be managed via phasing, I’d love to see some quests that have since been removed make a reappearance, like the Battle for the Undercity stuff that involved Thrall being on the throne. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Cataclysm zone quests, I love how they unified the feel of a zone and gave some zones some much-needed love in terms of story, but they’re also very, very dated now, in some ways more so than the vanilla quests ever were.

That’s it for today’s Queue — if you have any questions you’d like to see answered, be sure to leave them in the comments below!
