Dungeon bug causing reduced XP gains has been hotfixed
Patch 7.3.5 overhauled leveling in World of Warcraft by allowing both world zones and dungeons to scale to players. The patch also altered the experience curve, slowing down how quickly players could blaze through lower levels. Dungeons in particular were giving out significantly less XP than they did previously — and as it turns out, that’s at least partially the result of a bug.
Hi all,
From WoW’s earliest days, we’ve always had to take steps to limit experience gains for characters when grouped with someone of a drastically higher level. We recently became aware of a bug introduced in 7.3.5: a side-effect of the vastly expanded creature scaling was causing the logic to break when awarding XP in some situations. Earlier today, we applied a hotfix to creature experience that corrects this issue.
At the same time, we have significantly increased the experience awarded through queuing for random Normal dungeons from Classic through Draenor content. Running dungeons at the appropriate should feel rewarding, whether as a complement to or even an complete alternative to questing.
As always, we appreciate your feedback and will continue to keep a close eye on the pacing of the leveling experience in 7.3.5 and beyond.
As a long-time player, this issue is entirely believable. Even in classic World of Warcraft, a level 16 player being boosted through Deadmines by a level 60 would earn less experience per mob than they normally would. Boosting that way was only worthwhile because the level 60 could kill the mobs so quickly, the reduced per-mob XP hardly mattered.
If the game was still reducing XP gains even though the mobs were appropriately scaled to both the level 16 and level 60 players, that’s certainly an issue, and it’s good to know it’s been fixed. Players on the World of Warcraft forums are already reporting significantly improved experience gains in low level dungeons.
The speed of leveling was no doubt reduced by design in patch 7.3.5, but at least this bug will no longer exacerbate the issue.
