Yes, D&D exists in World of Warcraft
I knew I liked the fine folk of Boralus. Thanks to the fine folk at Wowhead and Reddit, I now know why I like the fine folks of Boralus. Everyone’s fine as heck today in my eyes, because people in the Warcraft universe play Dungeons and Dragons. Reddit poster SlapControl posted this image of several Kul Tiras cadets underneath the hedge maze in Boralus, getting together in the time-honored custom of arguing about which classes they wanted to play and whether or not you could do extra damage on a tree by using fire attacks.
Seriously, Blizz, it’s too soon for these jokes. Way, way too soon.
The Proudmoore Cadets found in this basement have a variety of dialogue concerning their game. The game they’re playing seems to have a serious Warcraft flavored homebrew aspect to it. Not only do they not have playable Bards (who are a staple of D&D), but they shoot Frostbolts into the darkness instead of Magic Missiles. Still, I’ve played plenty of RPG’s set in a pseudo-realistic modern day. It’s not entirely surprising to me that people in Azeroth would play what is, essentially, a ‘modern-day’ D&D game set in a world much like Azeroth itself. And really, even these Proudmoore Cadets know that people who need healing should stop standing in fire. That proves that their game has just that extra touch of verisimilitude which marks the best DM’s.
So far Boralus is on track to be one of the most ‘lived in’ feeling cities in any expansion. It surpasses even Suramar, and it’s definitely details like this that help cement it as such. I really hope there’s a quest at some point where we actually play in someone’s game. Even if it’s just to see what the tabletop version of Azeroth is like. And also to see if that cadet got his game master to relent and let him play a Bard or not.
