How to get attuned for Onyxia’s Lair in WoW Classic, For The Horde

In a previous post, I talked about the Onyxia’s Lair attunement questline from the Alliance side. In this post, I’ll discuss the Horde questline. Much like the Alliance version, the attunement questline is long and you’ll be going all over Azeroth to complete it.

Getting started with your epic quests

To begin, go to Kargath and talk to Warlord Goretooth. He’s going to give you a quest to go into Lower Blackrock Spire and kill Highlord Omokk, War Master Voone, and Overlord Wyrmthalak. Important Blackrock Documents spawn behind one of the three. You might as well kill all three so you can get the pieces needed for the key to Upper Blackrock Spire because a lot of what the Horde Onyxia questline has you do overlaps with the requirements for obtaining the key to UBRS and you have to go into UBRS. So, even as large as LBRS is, do the whole thing and take people with you who need pieces for UBRS. Once you’ve finished, head back to Goretooth.

Next up is Orgrimmar. Talk to Eitrigg and then Thrall. You’ll need that key for UBRS because you have to go to the amphitheater in the middle of the dungeon and kill Rend Blackhand. When UBRS was updated and this encounter removed, Glyth, Rend’s dragon, became Experiment 12-B, obtained from Lesser Cache of the Aspects after the Ultraxion fight in Dragon Soul. Collect Rend’s head and go back to Thrall.

The hardest part of the attunement

Go to Shadowprey Village in Desolace and talk to Rokaro. He tells you about Rexxar, one of Thall’s most loyal champions. You need to find him.

The next bit may be the hardest part of either attunement questline — it’s so simple but so maddening. Rexxar travels the main road through the zone. He could be anywhere within Desolace. Alliance would often kill him just because, if they found him on the road, too. Ask in General Chat if anyone has seen him. This one step could take hours to complete if you were just unlucky. Once you find him, he gives you a quest.

Rexxar’s quest takes you to Western Plaguelands and a gnome just south of Andorhal. Myranda the Hag gives you the next two quests. She’s going to teach you how to disguise yourself as a black dragonkin. In order to do that, you’ll need a whole lotta dragon eyes from Blackrock. If you still need people to obtain their UBRS key, start in LBRS and clear the dragons at the end of the dungeon. You are, unfortunately, probably going to need to head into UBRS to make sure everyone gets their eyeballs. Once you have your eyes, go back to Myranda. She will give you an amulet and a disguise.

Head to Dustwallow and Emberstrife.

A test of skulls

You have to prove your worth to Emberstrife so this means killing other members of the dragon aspects. If you never did the Horde attunement quests, you might have wondered why there were random dragons in the world not associated with any quests. This is what they were for, in addition to being a challenge if you stumbled upon them while solo. Bring a group.

Chronalis of the Bronze dragonflight is located outside of what will be the Caverns of Time. Scryer of the Blue dragonflight is found in Winterspring at the back of Mazthoril. Somnus of the Green dragonflight is located east of Temple of Atal’Hakkar in Swamp of Sorrows. Once you have those three skulls, you’ll be sent to Wetlands to kill Axtroz of the Red dragonflight. You’ll find him in eastern Wetlands near what will be Grim Batol.

Almost done

Emberstrife says this effort was designed to cement the Black dragonflight as supreme. He’s going to tell you to present your Dull Drakefire Amulet to General Drakkisath in UBRS. Um…yeah. You realize your disguise might fool some dragons but not Drakkisath. After you turn this in if you’re working on the UBRS key for anyone, go ahead and attack Emberstrife to get that done so you have more people attuned to that instance too. Since Emberstrife’s instructions won’t work it’s time to go find Rexxar — sigh — again, to figure out what to do next.

Rexxar tells you to go kill Drakkisath, loot his blood, and bring it back. Once this is completed, you’ll get your Drakefire Amulet. Remember, you must have it on you — in your bag at the very least — to enter Onyxia’s Lair and every raid member needs to have one.

There you go. The Alliance questline is longer and I think dragons in the Keep is more dramatic, but the sheer frustration I heard from Horde friends for having to find Rexxar makes this a toss-up on which questline is more epic. Good luck, no matter which side you’re playing.
