Blizzard adds a faster catch up to the legendary cloak, but who is it for?
Who knew that M.O.T.H.E.R. was such an entrepreneur? In a hotfix coming to Battle for Azeroth, she’ll soon start selling the Malefic Cores that are used to upgrade the legendary cloak’s corruption-resisting qualities. If you just leveled a cloak to fifteen this week, you would need a grand total of 14 Malefic Cores to have it be as powerful as someone who’s been upgrading since the beginning. Since you can only earn two cores a week you were looking at roughly 10 weeks before you were completely caught up. Now you can do it way sooner!
Later today, we will apply a hotfix to the game that will allow players who have upgraded the legendary cloak Ashjra’kamas to Rank 15 to purchase Malefic Cores from MOTHER for 2,000 Echoes of Ny’alotha. This will be repeatable, up to the current maximum Resistance that the cloak allows (currently 92 Corruption Resistance, and next week this will increase to 95).
The intent of Malefic Cores was to provide ongoing incremental weekly power gains, to help overcome remaining challenges in this final tier of Battle for Azeroth. This has been similar to past systems in Warlords of Draenor (upgrading the legendary rings via Archimonde drops) and Legion (upgrading trinkets from Argus the Unmaker). While each extra bit of Corruption Resistance only represents a small increase in potential power, we understand the frustration of feeling weeks behind, especially without any controlled way of closing the gap faster. With this hotfix, players can further supplement their progress through the wide variety of endgame content that rewards Echoes of Ny’alotha.
It will still be possible to earn up to two Malefic Cores per week by fully clearing a Horrific Vision and/or defeating N’Zoth the Corruptor on Normal difficulty or higher.
Thank you!
This feels like a really niche benefit. With the cost to upgrade sitting at 2,000 Echoes of Ny’alotha, it feels a little too pricey for the people who might want to get it the most. It’s also the fourth thing that has been tied to the Echoes of Ny’alotha system. You’ve got rank three essences, preserved corruptions, vessels for running Horrific Visions, and now the legendary cloak upgrade cores. Getting your rank three essences should come first. After that, buying the specific corruptions would probably yield the greatest power upgrade to that character.
I’m not saying that players should never buy these extra Malefic Cores and that there aren’t people who this will help. Just that in order to justify the cost per Core you have to check off a lot of boxes first. Of the characters that I’m currently playing, only one of them has any real interest in increasing the level of corruption resistance on their cloak, and I’m not in any real rush to get that done. But if you were lamenting that you couldn’t deck yourself out in all the corruption possible because you were behind on your cloak — I’m happy that you get that opportunity. I just wish it was a little cheaper.
