How to solve Hearthstone’s biggest secret and earn the Mysteries of the Phoenix card back

We knew there was a secret to solve in Hearthstone, but we didn’t expect it to be so intricate, and it was absolutely fascinating to watch the community come together worldwide to solve each of these super complex puzzles. Major props to the people in the WoW Secret Finding Discord server, as well as to our friends from the Secret Finding community in China. Thankfully, just replicating what they did — so that you too can earn your own Mystery of the Phoenix card back — is much easier than solving the puzzles in the first place!

To earn the Mysteries of the Phoenix card back, you have to solve four mysteries hidden throughout the Barrens. Each mystery leads to a unique puzzle — and some interesting gameplay. Fortunately, you can do these puzzles in Practice mode and fight against an AI opponent rather than trying to untangle these lengthy puzzles while fighting a real opponent.

So to start each puzzle, you’ll want to launch a game in Practice Mode (in the Solo Adventures menu). From there, you have to play certain specific cards (more on that later). Playing the correct cards will unlock the puzzle, which you then solve simply by clicking on things in the correct order. Don’t worry: read on, and we’ll walk you through everything you need to know to solve this Hearthstone secret!

Puzzle #1: The Cubes

This is the hardest one to setup (in order to initiate the puzzle), but the quickest and easiest to actually solve.

The Setup

To start this puzzle, you need to create a Rogue deck that includes five specific cards — Yoink!, Bamboozle, Plagiarize, Coerce, and Potion of Illusion —  as well as one Efficient Octo-bot, which you will need to activate while the other five cards are in your hand, in order to reduce their cost. The goal here is to be able to play those five cards in the same turn, and you can only accomplish that by using the Octo-bot.

Here is the deck we used. Note that you don’t need to copy the exact deck: you can use any Rogue deck you want as long as you have at least one of each of those five required cards, as well as at least one Octo-bot.

# 2x (1) Elven Archer
# 2x (1) Ethereal Augmerchant
# 2x (1) Guardian Augmerchant
# 2x (1) Pen Flinger
# 2x (1) Rocket Augmerchant
# 1x (1) Yoink!
# 2x (2) Bamboozle
# 1x (2) Bloodmage Thalnos
# 2x (2) Dirty Tricks
# 2x (2) Efficient Octo-bot
# 2x (2) Loot Hoarder
# 1x (2) Manafeeder Panthara
# 2x (2) Plagiarize
# 2x (2) Prize Vendor
# 2x (3) Coerce
# 2x (3) Field Contact
# 1x (4) Potion of Illusion

Deck code:

AAECAcKPBAT7zgPl0QOu6wOXoAQNzrkDub4D3r4D374D4L4Dn80DitAD5dMDtuEDqOsDq+sDvZ8EoaAEAA==

Once you’ve created your deck, just click Solo Adventures, and then Practice. Use your new deck to fight against any of the AI opponents you want, in a regular match.

During the game, you will need to keep playing until you find all of those key cards, and have them secured in your hand. You will then need to play your Efficient Octo-bot, and activate its Frenzy effect, in order to reduce the cost of the five cards.

Finally, all you’ll need to do is play those five cards on the same turn, and nothing else. The order in which you play them doesn’t matter, as long as you only play those five specific cards.

But make sure that you will still have room in your hand for one extra card — end your turn with nine cards or less in hand. Once you end your turn, an extra spell will be added to your hand. On your next turn, simply play that special spell, and you will be transported to the puzzle itself!

The Puzzle

This is, by far, the quickest of the four puzzles. All you have to do is use your own minions to attack the opposing minions; but each of them has to be attacked a specific number of times. Considering that minion 1 is the first enemy minion on the far left, minion 2 is the one to its right, etc., all the way to minion 7 on the far right:

Attack minion 1: 1 time.
Attack minion 2: 2 times.
Attack minion 3: 3 times.
Ignore minion 4 and minion 5.
Attack minion 6: 3 times.
Attack minion 7: 2 times.

Once you finish those attacks, you will know that you succeeded if all enemy minions have exactly 4 Attack. When that happens, just hit your Hero Power, and you win!

Puzzle #2: The Maze

This one is a little long, but nothing too terrible.

The Setup

This is the Druid deck we used to beat the first part of the puzzle:

# 2x (1) Guidance
# 2x (1) Partner Assignment
# 1x (2) Bloodmage Thalnos
# 2x (2) Guess the Weight
# 2x (2) Loot Hoarder
# 2x (2) Lunar Eclipse
# 2x (2) Manafeeder Panthara
# 2x (2) Mark of the Spikeshell
# 2x (2) Mark of the Wild
# 2x (2) Prize Vendor
# 2x (2) Solar Eclipse
# 1x (2) Thorngrowth Sentries
# 2x (3) Faire Arborist
# 2x (3) Fungal Fortunes
# 2x (5) Twilight Runner
# 2x (6) Nourish

Deck code:

AAECAaa4AwKt7AOXoAQO5boD+84DwNAD3tEDieADiuADluADtuED0eEDiuQDiu0Dh58E2p8EoaAEAA==

Just like with the previous one, you will need to enter an AI battle against the Innkeeper and keep playing until you have all the necessary cards in your hand at the same time.

Once you do, play them on the same turn (the order doesn’t matter): Guidance, Partner Assignment, Lunar Eclipse, Solar Eclipse, Mark of the Spikeshell, Mark of the Wild. End your turn, and you will get the special spell in your hand. Play it to start the actual puzzle.

The Puzzle

This puzzle is a maze. Hitting the left minion means that you turned left; hitting the middle minion means that you kept going straight, and hitting the right minion means that you turned right. But since you’re reading this guide, you don’t need to actually pay attention to where you’re going: just follow our handy walkthrough to the letter.

To solve the puzzle, you will need to hit the Middle or Right minions in a specific order (you never have to hit the Left minion). Proceed as follows (M=Middle, R=Right):

R-R-R-M-M   R-M-M-R-M   R-R-R-M-R   R-R-M-M-R   M-M-R-R-R   M-M-R-M-R   R-R-M-M-M

M-R-R-R-M   M-M-R-M-M   R-M-M-R-M   R-R-R-M-M   M-M-M-R-M   M-M-R-M-R   R-R-M-M-R

R-R-M-M-R   M-M-R-M-R   R-R-M-R-M   R-R-R-M-R   R-R-M-R-M   M-M-M-R-R   R-M-M-M-R

R-R-M-R-M   R-R-R-M-R   M-M-R-R-R   M-R-M-R-R   R-M-R-R-R   M-R-M-R-M   R-R-R-M-M

Once you’ve made those simple 140 steps through the maze, you win!

Puzzle #3: The Caravan

This one is simple, and the most fun of the four in my opinion.

The Setup

This is the Warrior deck we used to beat the first part of the puzzle:

# 2x (1) Imprisoned Gan'arg
# 2x (1) Shield of Honor
# 2x (1) Sword and Board
# 1x (2) Bloodmage Thalnos
# 2x (2) Bulk Up
# 2x (2) In Formation!
# 2x (2) Loot Hoarder
# 2x (2) Manafeeder Panthara
# 2x (2) Minefield
# 2x (2) Prize Vendor
# 2x (2) Slam
# 2x (3) Feat of Strength
# 2x (4) Outrider's Axe
# 2x (5) Cutting Class
# 2x (5) Stonemaul Anchorman
# 1x (5) Taelan Fordring

Deck code:

AAECAePjAwKoigSXoAQOvLkD9sID+84DkdADktAD99QDtt4Dz94DtuEDju0Dmu0D1fEDhqAEoaAEAA==

Same as usual: play until you get all the required Warrior cards in your hand. However, once you do (and have 10 mana to play them all), there are a few other things you should know: first, there need to be enough minions on the board that have a total of six health (or more). It doesn’t matter if they belong to you or to the opponent.

Second, unlike the other puzzles, play order matters for this one. You need to play the following Warrior cards, in this order:

  1. Minefield
  2. Bulk Up
  3. In Formation
  4. Feat of Strength
  5. Shield of Honor

Then end your turn. Get the special spell, play it, and on to the second part we go!

The Puzzle

This is the classic river-crossing logic puzzle, where you can’t leave certain creatures alone with others, and must find the optimal way to get them all to the other side. For the Hearthstone version of this: minions 1, 2, and 3 are Quilboar, minions 4, 5, and 6 are Orcs, and minion 7 is the Caravan.

To put minions in the Caravan, you need to drag them to the RIGHT of the Caravan. Then, hit your Hero Power to Travel with those minions (either from bottom to top, or from top to bottom).

1. Bottom: Place two Quilboar in the Caravan and Travel.
2. Top: Place one Quilboar in the Caravan and Travel.
3. Bottom: Place two Quilboar in the Caravan and Travel.
4. Top: Place one Quilboar in the Caravan and Travel.
5. Bottom: Place two Orcs in the Caravan and Travel.
6. Top: Place one Quilboar and one Orc in the Caravan and Travel.
7. Bottom: Place two Orcs in the Caravan and Travel.
8. Top: Place one Quilboar in the Caravan and Travel.
9. Bottom: Place two Quilboar in the Caravan and Travel.
10. Top: Place one Quilboar in the Caravan and Travel.
11. Bottom: Place two Quilboar in the Caravan and Travel.

Puzzle solved! Time for the last one.

Puzzle #4: The Bazaar

Oh, boy. Prepare yourself: take a bio break, drink some water, stretch, and take a deep breath, because this is by far the longest one.

The Setup

This is the Hunter deck we used to beat the first part of the puzzle:

# 2x (1) Adorable Infestation
# 2x (1) Arcane Shot
# 2x (1) Demon Companion
# 2x (1) Mystery Winner
# 2x (1) Overwhelm
# 2x (1) Tracking
# 2x (1) Wolpertinger
# 1x (2) Bloodmage Thalnos
# 1x (2) Bola Shot
# 2x (2) Loot Hoarder
# 2x (2) Manafeeder Panthara
# 2x (2) Prize Vendor
# 2x (2) Quick Shot
# 2x (2) Snake Trap
# 2x (4) Dire Frenzy
# 1x (5) Barak Kodobane
# 1x (5) Taelan Fordring

Deck code:

AAECAYoWBI3kA+XvA6iKBJegBA2izgP7zgOC0AO50AO50gO24QPy4QOpnwSqnwTinwShoAS7oAS9oAQA

Get into an AI game against the Innkeeper, where you will need to play these Hunter cards on the same turn: Adorable Infestation, Overwhelm, Quick Shot, Snake Trap, Dire Frenzy. Do so and you earn the special spell that unlocks the actual puzzle.

The Puzzle

There are a bunch of merchants selling goods, and a bunch of adventurers buying them. Every adventurer has a list of specific items that they need, and it’s up to you to buy and sell goods until everyone is satisfied.

To do so, you simply drag items, which are cards in your hand, to specific minions on the board. We’ll identify them as “top” and “bottom” minions, positioned from left to right. Without further ado, let’s get to the longest, but final puzzle.
