How much of a game should be playable via mobile apps?
With the return of the Mobile Auction House to the WoW Companion app, I am now thinking about how much of World of Warcraft could be likewise made accessible via an app, and how much should be. If it is okay to let people bid on auctions, delist auctions, and buyout auctions using the app, why shouldn’t people be able to list auctions as well? And if that’s okay, what isn’t?
I mean, there are elements of WoW that I think I could safely see shunted over to an app and never actually do them in game ever again, but is that actually good for the game? Do we want to have a mobile app that allows us to do pet battles or mission table missions without ever logging into the game? A Switch port of Torghast, where you can log in your World of Warcraft characters inside Torghast and just do that on the bus? If we can do the AH on our phones, should we also be able to craft with our various professions? Should we be able to gather herb nodes? Mine ore from deposits? At what point does it become detrimental to the game — if any such point exists — to offload parts of the game to applications that allow us to pursue those aspects without actually playing the game?
I would have a hard time pretending I would probably enjoy the most recent version of the Mission Table if it had actually been an auto-battler on my phone or tablet, but that doesn’t mean I think playing a big chunk of the game without actually playing the game has no drawbacks.
So what do you all think? Is there certain functionality via apps that would be bad for the game, or should we relax, roll up our sleeves, and embrace a future of doing all of our daily or world quests on our Samsung?
