Terror Zones, the new Diablo 2 Resurrected leveling path, arrive on the PTR

Live on the Diablo 2 Resurrected PTR, the new Terror Zone feature is aimed at players who are tired of leveling to 99 by farming the same bosses over and over again. Terror Zones are an answer to the same problem that Adventure Mode addresses in Diablo 3, but with a more Diablo 2 approach.

The goal is to make leveling to 99 have more options and variety than just farming the same bosses over and over again, but for it to remain something that tests a player’s skill, determination and knowledge of their class. Since Diablo 2 doesn’t have the same expanding difficulty levels of Diablo 3, the approach of Terror Zones is completely different from Adventure Mode — instead, it uses an invasion mechanic to convert the existing zones in D2R into hellscapes with the challenge players crave, and the sweet XP that goes along with that.

First off, you’ll have to enable Terror Zones to play in a game that has them — Terror Zones are an opt-in mechanic, you do not have to play them if you don’t want to. Assuming you do want to, however, once an hour a specific zone will be the focus of the Burning Hell’s ire and more powerful demons and creatures will flock to that zone to wreak havoc. Yes, sucks to be the people who live there but that’s why it’s called a Terror Zone and not a basket of adorable fuzzy kittens zone.

How do Terror Zones work?

As the zone comes under demonic assault, the difficulty of the various creatures attacking that zone will be customized to be more difficult based on the character who started the game’s level. So if you’re level 22 and you start up a Terror Zone enabled multiplayer session, the monsters will scale based on your level. If you leave the game and the highest level character is 23, the game will readjust to match that character’s level.

The scaling works as follows:

  • Normal Difficulty
    • Base: +2 levels up to level 45
    • Champion: +4 levels up to level 47
    • Unique: +5 levels up to level 48
  • Nightmare Difficulty
    • Base: +2 levels up to level 71
    • Champion: +4 levels up to level 73
    • Unique: +5 levels up to level 74
  • Hell Difficulty
    • Base: +2 levels up to level 96
    • Champion: +4 levels up to level 98
    • Unique: +5 levels up to level 99

There are specific zones in each Act that can be invaded by the Burning Hells and become Terror Zones in an enabled game. Keep in mind that this is being tested on the D2R PTR and that there could be changes, substitutions or additions to these zones during or after testing. In order to make use of the Terror Zones, you need to be able to reach them, so if you do not have access to an Act yet (such as Act V) then you won’t be able to go to their Terror Zone.

Terrorize the Terror Zones for XP

There are specific zones in each Act that can be invaded by the Burning Hells and become Terror Zones in an enabled game. Keep in mind that this is being tested on the D2R PTR and that there could be changes, substitutions or additions to these zones during or after testing. In order to make use of the Terror Zones, you need to be able to reach them, so if you do not have access to an Act yet (such as Act V) then you won’t be able to go to their Terror Zone.

All in all this is an interesting way to give D2R players some choice in terms of what content they run to get to level 99, something that any player can opt into or out of, and which will reward your persistence in challenging mobs between 2 and 5 levels above you for loot and XP for your climb to level 99. I’m looking forward to seeing it.
