Will Diablo 3 have a Season 29?
Up until April, we had yet to hear if Seasons in Diablo 3 would continue following the launch of Diablo 4. A new addition to the franchise has yet to stop players from enjoying existing titles, especially when presented with opportunities for leaderboard placement, as shown in the ongoing ladder competitions of Diablo 2. So when the community asked whether the Seasons feature would continue in D3, the developers answered, in short, yes (Virginia), there is a Season 29 coming for Diablo 3.
The Diablo team confirmed in one of their developer interviews that D3 will happen and will have a new seasonal theme. However, General Manager Rod Fergusson was careful to warn that the theme will not be as ‘rich’ as Season 28’s theme. This makes a lot of sense — Rites of Sanctuary is a monolith of a season. It could easily be considered the developers’ swan song to the community as they prepared for Diablo 4‘s release.
And generally, seasons will continue on Diablo 3! But following Season 29, themes will be reused in the title. Again, this is a logical move! The title’s in maintenance mode now, and the developers have re-used theme features previously to pad out slower seasons. For example, Seasons 20 and 22 brought back the double treasure goblin spawns from D3’s first themed season — Season 14, the Season of Greed. So while we may not see the Rites and its associated power-for-sacrifices again, we could revisit such highlights as:
- Season 27’s Sanctified Gear, tapping into the powers of the High Heavens
- Season 22’s Shadows of the Past, spawning clones of your character with unique builds/powers
- Season 20’s Season of the Forbidden Archives, unlocking your Kanai’s Cube slots to allow any legendary item in any cube slot
So, we know there will be a Season 29 for Diablo 3, and we know it will be something new and exciting for us to try out (though more lightweight than the Altar of Rites). We also know that the currently running season is not (yet) approaching the longest-running thus far in franchise history, so it may be another month before there is any news. But of course, we’ll share more as we find out.
