What do you think about the 2024 World of Warcraft release schedule?

It was pretty wild when the World of Warcraft developer team managed to plan out and execute the ambitious 2023 roadmap. So seeing them pull a Babe Ruth and release the equally ambitious 2024 roadmap seemed almost like hubris to me. But then again, they did just pull off that whole 2023 content roadmap, didn’t they?

I’m honestly very impressed with the WoW devs as a whole right now. The level of polish they’ve managed while working at a pace that has never been seen in the history of the game — not even during the period when it was constantly getting bigger and bigger from 2007 to 20010 — is honestly inspiring. And it appears that they intend to ramp up, not slow down, as they head into 2024 and The War Within, an expansion we saw revealed as the opening chapter in an ambitious three-expansion story arc.

Now, I am human, and I do still find myself a bit worried at the sheer audacity of this. I mean, it’s one thing to pull this off once, but to do it twice in a row while also beginning to work on a level of connected storytelling across three expansions is a much larger endeavor. Even with the success of the 2023 roadmap to serve as a proof of the concept, it’s a big ask. And also, it should be mentioned, the 2023 roadmap did have its detractors.

Some players felt that the content releases were too quick, and led to a sense of player burnout — you could barely catch your breath on the current content before the next raid or next open world event or newest zones would launch. It didn’t help that 2023 was one of the most crowded game launch years we’ve seen in quite some time — the field was crowded this year. So it’s possible that 2024 might be a bit easier for players since there won’t be so much else out there to play.
