What direction would you like to see Blizzard take with the many WoW Classic modes?

Back in 2019, Blizzard finally released the long requested original World of Warcraft experience as World of Warcraft Classic, with the long-term vision being vanilla content released in phases through level 60 and being done. After player feedback, Blizzard made the choice to continue the Classic experience with expansion content in 2021 and I don’t think they could see the multi-headed hydra that would spawn from this decision. Since then, the original WoW Classic game has splintered into the following:
- WoW Classic Era, a portion of the original servers that stopped with the level 60 vanilla experience.
- WoW Classic Hardcore, a niche offshoot of the Classic Era experience
- Season of Discovery, the once-branded “seasonal” style of Era content that is sticking around for the long haul.
- Cataclysm Classic, a portion of the original servers that re-released the WoW expansions as individual Classic experiences and will soon become Mists of Pandaria Classic this summer.
- WoW Classic anniversary, a brand new set of realms that restarts the Classic Era experience and will eventually re-release expansion content again starting with the return of The Burning Crusade Classic at the end of 2025 or beginning of 2026.
Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoy WoW Classic Era content and Season of Discovery but Classic is now 5 different games in a trench coat. It has left me wondering, where should Blizzard go with Classic from here? It’s not an easy answer because this bloat issue is compounded by two things — trying to fit WoW Classic around temporary seasonal content and then shifting to Cataclysm, which fundamentally overwrites the Classic spirit with the shift to an upgraded engine
Classic Era and Hardcore realms are fine as is, I think both should stay to keep the spirit of the original Classic vision. Season of Discovery is awesome but the time investment to progression in WoW Classic is antithetical to temporary seasonal content, it simply takes too long to level up. I’d rather see Classic take on temporary content similar to WoW Remix: Mists of Pandaria.
I do believe progressing through Classic expansions needs to stop somewhere and with MOP Classic on the horizon, Blizzard needs to decide fast where that is. My number one wish is an original Classic server that is comprised of vanilla, TBC Classic, and Wrath Classic. Anniversary realms provide the perfect opportunity to do that because it doesn’t make sense to have two Classic servers releasing expansion content at a near similar pace.
For those of you who enjoy WoW Classic, what direction would you like to see Blizzard take with the game(s)?
