Which World of Warcraft expansion would you like to see featured in Remix mode next?
Now that we’ve wrapped on the fel-filled finale of Legion: Remix, the time is ripe to speculate on where the future of our adventures into the past with the Infinite Dragonflight might take us. On the one hand it’s way too early to be thinking about another iteration of ridiculously overpowered trips through the timeways, but on the other hand our conversations and posts about what we’d like to see next could influence the team’s final decision on where to send us.
To be clear, there has been no confirmation of another remixed World of Warcraft chapter in the works. If the pattern of this game mode dropping in the twilight of an expansion holds, we wouldn’t see a third installment until the very end of Midnight around mid-2027. Nevertheless, I have seen quite a few conversations and great points being bandied about in the last few weeks concerning which previous expansions are dark horses, front runners, or out of the race entirely.
There are definitely a handful of expansions that I would consider to be extremely unlikely to feature in a potential Remix III. I would say it’s definitely too soon for The War Within and almost certainly too soon for Dragonflight. Classic Remix would be a huge undertaking, and we already have Classic servers for the original WoW experience. I don’t expect an immediate return to the Broken Isles for Legion: Remix II.
Could we simply head back to Pandaria? By 2027 the original version of Remix will be three years in the past. Some players might have missed it entirely, while others would be glad for a chance to grab some of the rewards that they missed out on adding to their collection. I could see this being a safety valve option — if the developers are overwhelmed, they might delay a third chapter for a Re-Remix. I do think that we are more likely to see another iteration or two before we start repeating our Infinite hijinks.
One thing that the first two Remixes had in common was popularity among the player base. That leads me to believe that Wrath of the Lich King: Remix would be well-received. I’d certainly be thrilled to head back in time to when my love for World of Warcraft really hit its stride, and there are plenty of current players who weren’t born yet when we first defeated Arthas atop Icecrown Citadel. One point against Wrath: Remix is that it would look quite dated — would you be happy with finally earning a transmog set to find out it’s a low-res 2009 model? The same could be said of Burning Crusade and Cataclysm.
Another good point I have seen made repeatedly is that an expansion needs to have enough potential rewards to fill the bags of the Remix vendors. Legion was perfect for this, and Mists had plenty of collectibles to earn as well. Could Wrath: Remix have an army of recolored mounts and shoehorned-in pets? Maybe. But there are other expansions that could offer a much more plentiful cornucopia of collectibles.
That leaves us, in my book, with three lead candidates: Warlords of Draenor, Battle for Azeroth, and Shadowlands. I have seen a surprising amount of support among the player base for all three (even Shadowlands!). An Infinite Bazaar outside of your Draenor garrison, with Moratari time skips that allow for instant construction, could be fun. A way to blast through a deluge of rewards locked behind Shadowlands Covenant grinds would be most welcome.
So which expansion do you think is most likely to serve as the next Remix? And, whether it’s probable or not, which WoW chapter would you most like to revisit as a all-powerful strider of the sands of time?
