Now that we have the schedule, what do you expect — or hope — to see at BlizzCon 2018?
Yesterday, we were treated to the official reveal of BlizzCon 2018’s full schedule. The biggest surprise — if you can call it that — was that a Diablo “What’s Next?” panel is planned for right after the opening ceremony. In case you haven’t put two and two together yet, the post-opening ceremony panel is usually focused on the big reveal for a given year. As such, many people are expecting something major from the Diablo universe to be revealed this BlizzCon.
Whether that announced be Diablo 4, a Diablo Netflix series, a remaster of Diablo 2, or something else… well, we don’t know. There’s solid reason to believe any one of those things could be announced. But outside of a mysterious Diablo announcement, the schedule doesn’t really leave room for much else. And I mean that literally — there’s almost no open space for surprise panels like we usually see when Blizzard is trying to hide something.
Given this information, a lot of people are suspecting Blizzard won’t really announce anything major for most of its IPs this year. It’s a reasonable assumption, and… well, I’m kind of in that camp of thinking. While Blizzard may have figured out a new way to surprise us, it just sort of feels like an “off” year in terms of biggies. Plus, I’ve gotten my hopes up in the past and wound up, well, not exactly disappointed — but still wishing I had tempered my expectations.
Then again, Blizzard did manage to sneak the Classic WoW announcement on us last BlizzCon. I honestly had no clue that was coming, nor did I ever expect it in a million years. Plus, Blizzard didn’t have a panel on it — they just announced that it was coming and that was that.
So maybe they have the same approach this year. Announce something that’s far off but still totally surprising, then discuss it the following year in more depth. Rinse, repeat. Actually, I may have just changed my own mind… StarCraft: Ghost, anyone? Boy, would that be a mic-drop moment.
Anyhow, enough thinking out loud. What do you expect from BlizzCon 2018 now that we have a schedule? Will Blizz surprise us? Or will this just be one of the “smaller” BlizzCons?
