What would you like to see for gear catch-up mechanics in WoW?

So we found out we’re getting a bump to World Quest gear in order to help people gearing up for Raid Finder Crucible of Storms, and that has me thinking back to the days of running endless Heroic dungeons in The Burning Crusade for Badges in order to buy gear that was as good as what dropped in raids. Anyone remember that? By the time Sunwell came out, you could get badge gear that was easily the equal of Black Temple — a lot of our Fury Warriors, Rogues, and Enhancement Shaman were rocking the fist weapons from the Isle of Quel’Danas badge vendor. It’s a system we had up until Wrath of the Lich King — I also remember running heroic dungeons to get Tier set gear that was exactly the same set as 10 man raids were picking up.

From my perspective, the current World Quest based system is a decent compromise between people who want raid gear to stay unique and people who want a means to fill in those itemization holes that naggingly persist for weeks and months. It’s not perfect, but it does the job without making it possible to actually get raid gear — as in Wrath, when I rolled a new DK and had her in DK Tier 10 in two days — or otherwise make raiding meaningless. But it occurs to me that you guys might have better ideas for catch-up mechanics. I mean, we have coin rolls and we have World Quests, what else do we need?

Should they bring badges back and let us farm Heroics or even Mythics for currency to spend on gear? They kind of do that with Azerite pieces now, although it’s a ton of breaking down to do it. What else would you suggest? Make crafting viable again? What catch up mechanics would be the best fit for World of Warcraft?
