How much do you think WoW classes should change between expansions?
For a long while, World of Warcraft seemed to have no issues completely upending how certain classes played if the developers felt it provided a better overall experience. Usually these changes would happen for almost all classes when a new expansion launched, but sometimes they’d occur in the middle of one as part of a patch. Since Legion, however, classes have felt relatively set in their designs.
On the one hand, this saves players the trouble of completely relearning their favorite class when an expansion launches. After all, it can be really disheartening to find your favorite class unrecognizable overnight. On the other hand, it means that a class you like can start to feel relatively stagnant. Worse yet, it can mean that any issues you do have with your class stick around for much longer.
I’ve been thinking a lot about this ever since the Shadowlands alpha launched. Shadow Priests, by and large, appear to not be changing very much. I know Shadow has its issues and plenty of folks out there would like to see those addressed, but I’m actually fairly okay with the way it plays right now. I don’t necessarily disagree with the detractors — I just don’t mind it as much as some. And yet…
I still wish Shadow were changing more in Shadowlands. I’ve started missing the idea of my class/spec changing drastically with a new expansion. Even if the changes aren’t always for the better, or even if I leave an expansion wishing the design had been different, I still miss the excitement that comes with big changes. It shakes things up, keeps them fresh. Again, it doesn’t always succeed, but I kind of appreciate being able to point to a specific expansion and go, “Shadow played in this specific way during this certain expansion.”
So even if I don’t dislike the way my class plays right now, I still wish it were changing more, primarily for the sake of change. How about you guys? Do you wish classes always went through major changes during each expansion launch? Would you rather your class never be touched once it hits that sweet spot for you? Let me know!
