How would you like to see Blizzard get into the TTRPG market?
Tabletop gaming is on the boom, with Hasbro recognizing that Dungeons and Dragons and Magic: The Gathering are growing at a remarkable rate during the pandemic. With the popularity of such games on the rise, and with Blizzard having been involved in the market before in the early 2000s, it feels like it’s time to revisit the idea of our favorite franchises like Diablo, World of Warcraft, StarCraft, and Overwatch getting tabletop RPG treatments. But how should Blizzard go about entering the market? Should they simply license their properties, as they have done before with both Diablo and Warcraft?
I personally think that they should at least consider doing an in-house approach, starting up a fairly small dedicated RPG company to handle their properties themselves. There are a lot of examples in TTRPG spaces of small press publishers who put out excellent products with minimal staff, and Blizzard could definitely learn from groups like Green Ronin here — you don’t need a division as big as Wizards of the Coast to put out solid gaming products. Plus, a big part of Wizards’ current success is due to Magic: The Gathering, and I feel like Blizzard is one of the companies that’s displayed an ability to create a card game that rivals Magic in complexity with Hearthstone. As strange as it may sound, Blizzard could take Hearthstone across the divide into tabletop spaces.
But I understand why some might argue for a license arrangement — Blizzard could easily find someone else to do the work of adapting their properties, much as the Dragon Prince and Avatar TV series have been licensed by RPG companies. Blizzard’s never actually released their own pen and paper RPG, after all, and they might prefer to let someone else do the work.
How would you prefer they approach it, if they chose to? How would you want to see Blizzard re-enter the TTRPG market?
