What are your thoughts on the Worldsoul Saga?
The World of Warcraft development team gave viewers and attendees at BlizzCon a major surprise by announcing the next three expansions in the franchise: The War Within, Midnight, and The Last Titan — all falling under the rubric of The Worldsoul Saga. While there’s still some questions as to what this means for the game (frequency of release and how many patches per expansion are at the top of my list), as someone heavily invested in the story of Azeroth I’m very excited by this announcement.
The main benefit of grouping expansions into a larger whole is that it allows the team to not feel constrained by the standard expansion cadence. In fact it’s pretty arguable that Dragonflight is actually part one of The Worldsoul Saga, and the fate of Iridikron — something we’ve ruminated about before — becomes less of an immediate concern when it seems reasonable to presume he’ll be dealt with at some point in the Saga (my money is it’ll be in The Last Titan because of his ties to Northrend). Other known and potential foes such as Xal’atath or Galakrond no longer have to be fought at an expected moment but instead can be used where they make the most sense thematically.
The fact that we have a better sense as to where our characters will be journeying also helps immerse them in the story. Someone who has zero interest in an Earthen/Nerubian expansion like The War Within could be super-excited about all the Elf fun coming in Midnight or enjoy the prospect of returning to Northrend in The Last Titan. It also seems to matter more now, as we can see an end to the current World of Warcraft chapter and no longer have to feel like we’re jumping from the side quest hub of Shadowlands to the side quest hub of the Dragon Isles. We’re clearly on a path that I want to see to the end.
What about you? Are you excited about the larger view of the game’s future? Do you wish we had more details on Midnight and The Last Titan, or do you think we know too much? And which of the three expansions are you most looking forward to?
