Look up! What’s your favorite skybox in World of Warcraft?

There are several elements in video games that people love and form attachments to: character and environmental design, music composition, concept art, combat interaction, just to name a few. I enjoy the look World of Warcraft’different environments and zones more often than not but one part that is a particular favorite of mine are the different skyboxes of Azeroth. Personally, I don’t need the display resolution to be ultra-realistic in 4K or 8K for me to enjoy a game and I’d rather a game skip high-end definition and resolution if it means that the environmental design and art direction are well thought out and implemented.

Time and again, I’m constantly amazed when I look up in-game and while it’s hard for me to choose a favorite, I really enjoyed the Northrend skyboxes when I played through Wrath of the Lich King Classic with the Dragonblight skybox being my favorite of them all. Now, part of this are the in-game auroras which, I know aren’t exactly unique in Northrend, but in real life they’re a personally favorite phenomena of mine that I hope I’ll be lucky enough to see one day. What helps set it apart from other zones is the combination of aurora, the cold blue color, the snowy environment, and the sick piano music which makes Dragonblight strike a chord in me that is hard to explain and hard to capture in other zones.  It’s my own perfect blend of everything in visual game design wrapped into one.

That’s not to say the other zones are lacking in anything substantial by any means. While it’s not a full skybox effect, the green sky effect that flashes over the Dragon Isle’s during Dragonflight patch 10.1.7‘s Dreamsurge event is something I think looks really cool when it happens.

If you can’t tell yet, I’m drawn to cool colors on the wheel and I lean towards greens and blues but I’d like to hear from you, which of the Azerothian skyboxes is you favorite?
