How to collect all the Warlock pet customizations in World of Warcraft

Warlocks, are you tired of your demons looking a little… dull? Does the hellfire in your pets’ eyes just not have the spark that it used to? Well fear not, for there are many new appearances to collect to customize your fel friends with just a little bit of time, gold, and perhaps some sanity. It’ll help if you’re max level, mostly because some of these drops come from old raid or dungeon bosses so it’ll significantly cut down on the amount of time you’ll have to spend bringing ruin to your enemies — but that’s part of the fun, right?

Once you collect an appearance, you can use them by visiting any Barber Shop. You select each pet with buttons on the upper right, similar to Druid forms.

I’ll split the following sections by demon, because we’ve got quite a lot to go over.

A face only a mother could love...

Imps, Fel Imps, and Fiends

If you’re a fan of the old school Imp model, there’s six options you can learn. Two of the six you can learn have unique color combinations (Felblaze Imp has green skin and red hair, while Darkfire imp has ash skin and dark crimson hair), while the rest are just shades of a single color.

  • Grimoire of the Dreadfire Imp – Given by Vi’el in Winterspring (way down in the South in Frostwhisper Gorge)  – Talk to the Imp and agree to give him a portion of your life.
  • Grimoire of the Fiendish Imp – Sold by our friend Aridormi during Legion Timewalking for 1000 Timewarped Badges
  • Grimoire of the Felblaze Imp – Interesting color combo – has a chance to drop off Pusillin, the Imp with the same color scheme in Dire Maul (Warpwood Quarter).
  • Grimoire of the Netherbound Imp – This one is a bit more difficult; has a chance of dropping from Matron Folnuna, one of the world bosses from the Greater Invasions in the Antoran Wastes.
  • Grimoire of the Darkfire Imp – Interesting color combo – Purchase from Imp Mother Dyala in the Dreadscar Rift for 15,000 gold.
  • Grimoire of the Felfrost Imp – This one is a bit more tricky. Drops from Twinkle, the Madam Shadow’s Felhound by the Deathmatch Arena at the Darkmoon Faire during the phased Warlock questline. Talk to Madam Shadow at the Faire and keep questioning her until she tosses you into the arena to fight Twinkle. He’s tough, with a stacking enrage and fast melee, but you got this! He’ll drop the grimoire after you defeat him.
    • Already did the questline and didn’t know? No problem! Next time Darkmoon Faire rolls into town, pop on over with your warlock and the grimoire is sitting in the middle of the Arena, waiting for you to grab it.

Fel Imps were added in Legion, and are the slightly uglier, stinkier cousins of the Imps. Nothing too daunting on this one (outside of Time Rifts, which can likely be soloed at this point), and nothing truly stands out as “amazing” looking in this warlock’s humble opinion.

Fiends are the cool mix of the original Imp and the Fel Imps: they’ve got the skinny original imp body, but more Fel Imp-style horns. They’re also really easy to unlock! Just finish the Warlock 10.1.5 questline that ends with When Revenge Burns Green and you unlock them all.

Void Lords and Sayaad

Our old blueberry-flavored Voidwalker friends got the short end of the proverbial stick on this one. Sorry friends, you don’t have the power to shackle Dimensius… yet.

  • Grimoire of the Voidlord – You can grab two armored models (one with red armor, one with grey) from a friendly neighborhood Legion Scribe (Inscription: Pattern sold by Matthew Rabis in the Legion Dalaran sewers for 100 Sightless Eye)

While there’s currently no new Incubus models (I wish you were here…), there are two new Succubus models. If you are looking for a more pale Succubus to go with your void elf glamour — or, alternately — you’re looking for crimson and fel colors to really show off your green fire, you’re in luck!

  • Grimoire of the Shadow Succubus – This is the pale skin/blueish wings; crafted once again by a friendly neighborhood Legion Scribe (Inscription: Pattern acquired by doing /kiss to the Succubus Syaith who only appears during the world quest “Where there’s a whip…” on the Broken Shore).
  • Orb of the Fel Temptress – Has a chance to drop from Hellblaze Temptress in the Cathedral of the Eternal Night dungeon.

Much like with the Fiends, you unlock all four Shivarra customizations when you grab a single item: Grimoire of the Shivarra which is crafted by, you guessed it, friendly neighborhood Legion Scribes (Inscription: the pattern is a drop off any demon, it appears. Check the comments in this wowhead link for some ideas… shouldn’t take too long to get.)

Felhunters and Dreadhounds

For our old trusty Felpuppies, there’s really only two options. There’s a greenish colored model with brown hair and purple arm tentacles, and there’s a purple colored model with grey hair and green tentacles.

As for Dreadhounds, you have two options depending on what you’re after. There’s a really cool red and black flame-like hell-Dreadhound, which requires a little bit of work that I’ll describe below, and there’s a purple/fel dreadhound that you can easily just go grab from Legion Karazhan.

  • Grimoire of the Xorothian Felhunter – Hellfire model – Transmog your staff (yes, you need a staff) into Zhar’doom, Greatstaff of the Devourer (which, if you don’t have, you’ll need to go kill Illidan Stormrage in Black Temple and hope it drops!) and head to Antorus, the Burning Throne. Kill Portal Keeper Hasabel and then take the orange portal on the left of the boss, and you will see a demonic gateway that allows you to interact with it. Pick the option, “Channel the power of your weapon into the gateway” and collect the item. [Note: I am seeing some reports of this not working in Midnight, likely due to transmog changes. I’m also seeing some reports that it has been fixed as of 12.0.5. Your mileage may vary.]
  • Ritual of the Voidmaw Felhunter – Fel model – Head to Legion Karazhan and right after killing Mana Devourer, there’s a bookshelf on the second floor of the library with this tome.

Wrathguards and Demonic Tyrants

Hope you weren’t expecting cool new appearances for your Felguard, because there aren’t any. Wrathguards sadly just get some new clothing options (do you want red, purple or green clothes?), though the purple clothed one does have tan skin which makes it a bit unique looking!

  • Grimoire of the Wrathguard – Grants all three colors – crafted from a friendly neighborhood Legion Scribe (Inscription: Pattern sold by Warmage Kath’leen on the Broken Shore for 500 Nethershard).

Demonic Tyrants at least give you some options! Though much like the Wrathguard, you’re mostly just picking the difference in skin color and slight variations of armor colors. At least there’s a really cool hellfire red model that I think is the coolest of the bundle.

Darkglares, Observers and The Ancient Observer

Ah, yes, our ugly floating eyeball friends. There’s multiple options for the Darkglare which come from all over the dungeons and raids of Legion, so depending on the color you’re chasing, you’ll need to go slaughter different things.

The Observer, meanwhile, has had a bit of a checkered past. Way back in the day you would get this model if you were specced into Grimoire of Supremacy, but that was later replaced with a glyph (remember those?). Now you just need to go click on a Carved Eye in different locations to collect the appearances. I’ll post the waypoints for anyone using an addon like TomTom, as it will really help for these.

  • Grimoire of the Mana-Gorged Observer – Light blue Observer, purple eyes – In Deadwind Pass, on the outside of the Karazhan instance (not inside the instance or raid!), click on the Carved Eye hidden behind a door that usually leads to the Nightbane alcove. (Waypoint: 43.8, 72.8)
  • Grimoire of the Whispering Observer – Dark blue Observer, bright blue eyes – In the Ahn’Qirah zone (not raid!), click the Carved Eye hidden on a pile of rubble on the right of the stairs leading to where Prophet Skeram is in AQ40. (Waypoint: 43, 9.2)
  • Grimoire of the Plagued Observer – White Observer, yellow eyes – In Eastern Plaguelands, the Carved Eye is on a tree to the right of the entrance to Stratholme Living Side. (Waypoint: 28.6, 13.5)
  • Grimoire of the Dire Observer – Green Observer, purple eyes – Head to Feralas and into the Dire Maul area of the map (not the instance!). Within the Dire Maul Arena location, there’s a room at the bottom where you’ll find the Carved Eye in an alcove near the hyenas. (Waypoint: 61.5, 30.6)
  • Grimoire of the Blasted Observer – Red Observer, white eyes – In the Blasted Lands, make sure you speak to Zoridormi to enter the old version of the zone, then this Carved Eye is located at the base of the Dark Portal on the left side. (Waypoint: 55.6, 53.5)
  • Grimoire of the Zealous Observer – Grey Observer, orange eyes – In Tirisfal Glades, make sure you speak to Zoridormi to enter the old version of Tirisfal, then head up to the Scarlet Monastery. Head into the building (but not the instance!) called The Grand Vestibule, then head left, then left again. You’ll find a cloister with three candelabras, where the Carved Eye is hidden behind the middle one. (Waypoint: 40.3, 53.2)

There’s one more Observer we should mention — the Ancient Observer. This model of Observer uses the same model that Durumu uses in Throne of Thunder, and it requires a bit of work to get. I’ll do my best to explain below how to get it.

  • Grimoire of the Ancient Observer – Durumu model – Head to Throne of Thunder and kill Durumu the Forgotten so you can loot Durumu’s Glass Pupil. Use this item to toss it into the center off the room, starting a puzzle that spawns a grimoire, 3 colored braziers (red, green, purple), and 16 candles around the room. Click the grimoire to start the puzzle, and magic lines will connect between the candles; you must correctly count how many lines exist of each color, click on the baziers to get a stacking buff, then click on the grimoire once you have the proper number of each buff. You have to do this five times. Yes, it’s a pain. Some hints from Wowhead:
    • Count how many green and red lines are there, the difficult portion is calculating purple lines as their number raises exponentially.
    • For purple lines, count how many candles have purple lines coming out of them, then follow the math formula: purplecandles * (purplecandles – 1) / 2
      • As an example, if there are 10 candles with purple lines coming out of them: 10 * 9 / 2 = 90 * 2 = 45.
    • Once you have the above number, subtract the number of green and red lines, and the final result will be the number of purple lines to input on the purple brazier.
    • Or just use the google sheet that was listed in the top comment here. This lets you skip all the math.

Abyssals

Sadly we don’t get any new Infernal models, but we do get the Abyssal models that you see pretty much all over Outland in the Burning Crusade. This is just another group of color swaps, with fel green, fire orange, but then a really neat blue-red model that stands out. Thankfully, these are super easy to grab.

  • Grimoire of the Abyssal – Grants all three colors – crafted from a friendly neighborhood Legion Scribe (Inscription: Pattern drops off Guldan/The Demon Within in The Nighthold).

WHEW. That’s an awful lot of running around Azeroth and the connected worlds to grab some alternate appearances, but sometimes fashion is worth the hike. Hopefully you’ve managed to find some new looks that’ll match the cool transmog sets unlocked in Midnight.
