What to play this weekend: Highwater, Outcast, and the Steam Spring Sale, oh my!
Happy Friday, Watchers! The weekend is here, the weather is (allegedly) warming up, and it’s time for us to dive into games, both new and familiar. It was a relatively quiet week for new game releases, but there are still plenty of options that may tickle your fancy. Here are the games worth your time this weekend.
Highwater (adventure)
Get ready for some watery whimsy — according to Highwater‘s lead-in on Steam, “Earth has flooded and the planet is doomed, but there’s still time to enjoy the view.” Previously a mobile title for iOS and Android, Highwater has you navigating a flooded, post-apocalyptic 3d world through story-driven adventures, sailing from Hightower to Alphaville and beyond in search of people to rescue with the goal of escaping the ruined planet. The title has a little bit for everyone — isometric turn-based puzzle combat, bright colors and a sense of humor, and its very own in-game Pirate Radio which serves as both original soundtrack and commentary that may very well hold some keys to the survival of you and your friends.

Outcast: A New Beginning (third-person shooter)
Outcast: The New Beginning is rather impressive — a truly gorgeous sequel to the original Outcast released in 1999. Explore a beautiful-but-alien open-world setting of Adelpha as Cutter Slade, ex-Navy SEAL and recently resurrected main character from the original title. Brought back by the Talan Yods, Slade finds the ancient people of the first game enslaved as robot forces invade the resource-stripped planet. It’s up to you to save this lovely setting through fast-paced adventures in the non-linear setting.

Deal of the week
Yes, friends, the Steam Spring Sale kicked off today, right on the heels of the just-completed Women-Led Games sale. With a truly unknowable number of titles on sale anywhere from 20-90% off, you’re practically guaranteed to find something to your liking. Heck, if you’re not sure it will be to your liking, try playing it for less than two hours; return it to Steam if it doesn’t capture your desire to play it through entirely.
Personally, I’m picking up Brotato, because how do you resist an adorable potato wielding six weapons against hordes of aliens in an arena. Head LoLCat Dan O’Halloran nabbed Cyberpunk 2077 after multiple story discussions by Joe Perez and Matt Rossi in the Lore Watch podcast. Watcher Balgair grabbed Stardew Valley during last week’s sale and has been enjoying the lovely chill atmosphere (thanks for sharing!).
And of course, members of our editorial staff are still reviewing their wishlists for sale wins. So check out the Steam Spring Sale on the main Steam store site or through the Steam app, running until March 21, 2024 at 10:00 am pacific. Who knows — maybe you’ll find your next favorite game?
