Keeping things tense and exciting in tabletop games without just resorting to throwing the players into a fight is a central part of our discussion today on Tavern Watch -- we're talking torches burning down in Shadowdark or Crows, using the spotlight like a TV show director to keep things tense in Monster of the Week, or the Chaos mechanic in Triangle Agency that makes every roll a balancing act.

The fall weather here in the Northern Hemisphere is the perfect time to hang out inside around a table with your friends, your collection of dice, and your favorite tabletop RPGs.

One of the ways in which modern Tabletop RPGs are distinguished from their ancestors is in how they end up getting made and reaching an audience.

Hollows is a new tabletop RPG — currently under development by Rowan, Rook and Decard — that aims to make boss fights better and more satisfying.

While big-name tabletop RPGs aiming to compete with Dungeons & Dragons (or at least try to fill a similar niche) garner a lot of attention -- for example, Matt Colville's "tactical heroic cinematic fantasy" MCDM RPG, which raised over $4 million dollars --  there are a lot of cool and innovative games offering unique experiences that are also out there competing for your attention (and pledge of support).

We've seen Warcraft TTRPGs and board games, and now World of Warcraft is making the move to tabletop strategy gaming.
