Unearthed Arcana

There have been quite a few Unearthed Arcana subclasses for D&D 5e.

It can be easy to forget that Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition came out six years ago, in August 2014.

It's that time again: D&D has released new Unearthed Arcana. The latest UA playtest content, we have two new subclasses with the the Undead patron for Warlocks and the College of Spirits for the Bard.

We've talked about Unearthed Arcana here before, focusing on Subclasses to change up how your favorite class plays, but the latest playtest content from Wizards of the Coast for Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition is something a little different -- instead of focusing on new subclasses to alter a specific class, it decides instead to give you new feats which can be taken by almost any class (although some wouldn't be very useful for all classes).

Playtest content in Dungeons and Dragons — or Unearthed Arcana — is a lot of fun because it provides new options for everybody to explore and gives you a peek into what's coming out for D&D before it gets a book release.

We've talked a bit about how to run a D&D game, and we'll likely talk about it again, but since we've featured several Unearthed Arcana supplements and talked about books like the Explorer's Guide to Wildemount, it feels to me like time to discuss a somewhat sensitive topic that every D&D group eventually confronts.

One of the reasons I love Wizards of the Coast and tabletop RPGs in general is how quickly they can get new class options to us with things like Unearthed Arcana, and the latest edition unveils a whole new Psionics system.

One of the fun things about Dungeons and Dragons is looking at all the cool options that you'll probably never actually get to play, because there's just not enough time to play sixteen D&D games in a week.

There's a tradition behind Wizards of the Coast's Unearthed Arcana which goes all the way back to the original Advanced Dungeons and Dragons line of games, before even 2nd Edition AD&D or the consolidation of both lines into what we called 3rd Edition.
