What was your very first World of Warcraft character, and what happened to them?

classic character creation

Do you still remember the first World of Warcraft character you’ve ever rolled? In a recent Queue, our friend MusedMoose asked us that question, and many were eager to reminisce about their experiences on that subject.

For me, it was the year 2007 — Burning Crusade was the expansion at the time, and we were on patch 2.2. I was already a Blizzard fan, having played Warcraft 2 and Warcraft 3, Diablo and Diablo 2, and even games I didn’t know were made by Blizzard, such as Rock N’ Roll Racing, and Blackthorne. Still, at that time I was completely hooked on Diablo 2 — and knowing that we wouldn’t get a Diablo 3 any time soon, I looked for the next best thing by the same company.

WoW was an MMO, and that was scary — but I did have a little bit of MMO experience, having played Ragnarok Online before (can you believe that game is still online to this day?!). It wasn’t the same as an action RPG, but WoW allowed me to create a character, level them up, learn new skills, spend talent points, and acquire gear: The basic gameplay loop seemed to be there.

When it was time to roll my first character, for some reason, I tried to re-create a Grunt from Warcraft 2 (and that’s despite the fact that even in those RTS games, I already favored the Alliance — but the allure of being an Orc Warrior grabbed me at the moment). So my Orc Warrior was born among the dirt and rocks of Durotar. It was time to begin playing the game!

…and I hated it.

Leveling a Warrior was rough back then. It was far from the most interactive gameplay experience in the world. Lots of auto-attacking, lots of waiting for your health to regenerate after combat. It only took about two days for me to write off World of Warcraft as a game I didn’t want to play anymore.

Thankfully, a few days later, I decided to give the game a second chance. I tried rolling a bunch of other characters, of every race and class I could see — and things finally clicked when I tried a Human Mage, who I kind of modeled after the Frozen Orb Sorceress I used to play in Diablo 2. That connection was faint, but more than enough to grab me. And that Mage became my main throughout all of BC.

As for the Orc Warrior: Sadly, he got deleted. But over my years of WoW playing, I rolled many other Warriors — thankfully, the class is much more fun to play now than it was then — and a few other Orcs as well.

How about you? Do you still remember the very first time you launched the WoW client, and which character decision you made then? What drew you to make your very first race/class combination? Was that decision the right one, or did you end up completely changing your mind later? Do you still have that character, or are they lost to the ages?
