Love it or hate it, one of the most pervasive aspects of videogames -- whether that's MMOs like World of Warcraft, loot fiestas like Diablo 4, or even opening new packs in Hearthstone -- is luck, as represented by the random number generator (or RNG).

Playing World of Warcraft, I am often struck  by how ludicrous it can seem when a piece of gear shows up more often than you'd expect.

While playing on my Monk the other day, I saw another leather-wearing player rocking some really nice-looking pants.

I don't believe it's a secret that I never really liked the Great Vault system we got in Shadowlands.

It's been many weeks since The Grand Tournament was released for Hearthstone.

RNG stands for 'random number generator' and, in this case, it basically means random stats on gear.

RNG is short for random number generator, and its the randomness when you do something like roll for loot, or even the randomness that determines whether a certain piece of loot even drops - whether loot is set to personal, or you're using master looter, there's always some randomness because a boss doesn't drop everything it could drop when you kill it.
